Dear Class of 2017,
So, it was Friday night and I was sitting in my dorm, scrolling through my Instagram and cleaning out my Snapchat feed. I saw some friends of mine from high school, who were juniors when I was a senior. The students that would soon be filling the seats that my senior class left for them. I could feel the excitement as I witnessed them keeping the traditions that had been started before we were even born. While I was excited for them, I couldn't help but feel a little sad. Senior year was one of the best experiences in all of my 18 years. In this article, I will tell you a few things you need to know as you begin your senior year-- some things that I wish someone would have told me when I was in your shoes.
Do NOT let senioritis get you into trouble! I cannot stress this enough. Do not slack off just because it's your senior year and you feel like you don't need to keep up your grades to pass. Trust me, colleges want you to have good grades during your senior year. It's when most of them expect you to show your true colors. Exceed their expectations and keep up the good work. You never know where you're going to end up. Who you're going to end up being.
While you shouldn't let senioritis mess with your brain, you should also allow yourself some freedom and time to have fun with your friends and fellow students. You may never see them again, or very rarely. Spend all the time that you can with them. I wish I would have when I was a senior.
Go to all of your school related activities, even if you don't like sports. Be there and support your schools. The students and coaches of the teams have had a rough go of it too, and their hard work should be saluted. Imagine having to maintain a certain GPA while also playing a football game every week. Doesn't that sound like the definition of hard work?
Lastly, but most important, cherish every memory you have made and will make, for they will follow you through the years you have ahead of you. One day you will be just like me-- sitting in your dorm on a Friday night, pondering over everything you've ever done.
I'll leave you with a few last minute words of wisdom: be you. Most importantly, be yourself this year. You will do amazing things. While you may wish for it to all be over, remember what will be gone once you graduate. Have fun, keep your heads up, and congratulations on getting one step closer to the rest of your lives.
