I'm going to be brutally honest and say that you taking the position of the Secretary of Education for the United States scares me, Ms. DeVos. I am planning on being a middle or high school English teacher and graduating in 2019, even though I will barely have any time in the professional setting while you are in office, what you enforce could impact the education system for years to follow. What worries me the most is your lack of experience, Ms. Devos. You have never attended or sent your children to a public school, which troubles me because of many of the issues at public schools are not or not as prevalent at many private schools. Which brings me to my problem with you having no experience of actually working in a school district. It's scary to think that I have more experience through student teaching than you do, and you are nominated for the highest education position in the country, Ms. DeVos. You have no government experience as well, which is troubling because this position entails leading a team to improve the education system of our ENTIRE country.

I watched your hearing, Ms. DeVos, and I'm not going to lie, it was painful to watch. Ms. DeVos, you were not prepared for many of the questions and you did not answer them how you should have if you had the best interest of our education system in mind. I can't speak on your ideas of school choice and charter schools because I don't have experience with either, but I do know that many charter schools exclude students that don't fit the mold for the students that don't fit the school's criteria. Many charter schools are up and coming, and I will be interested to see how successful they are in preparing students for college and their careers, but the focus needs to be on the public school system too because not every student will have the opportunity to attend a charter school.

Let me tell you from my brief experience that our country has very diverse students: English language learners, students of different socioeconomic classes, students of different learning levels, students with behavioral disorders, students with special needs, students with disabilities, students who are limited to their opportunities simply because of the school district that they live in, students who are refugees, students who have PTSD, students who are a part of the LGBTQA community and students living with mental illness. Students of all walks of life depend on our public school system to assist them in getting the education that they deserve. Our diverse student population in our country is what makes us so great. We need to continue and improve supporting the students of our country so that each student has the opportunity to be successful, but unfortunately I don't think that the position of Secretary of Education is for you, Ms. DeVos because you don't have the best interest or experience to help every student in America.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
