These past few episodes of DC’s "Legends of Tomorrow" have been a bit lackluster. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to watch the episodes live as they air. But I do DVR them and I wait until the following day to watch them. These past few episodes just have not satisfied the premise of the show that was promised. Every episode following the series premiere slowly drives my interest away from the show. In the latest episode, they go to the Wild West and there we meet Jonah Hex. Jonah is an interesting character in the DC universe similar to Batman as he has no super powers but is still a formidable ally.
Let me just say that this was a wasted opportunity in the show. It would have been better if the showrunners focused on the whole side story for Jonah and his origin and how he “relates” to Rip (they make a connection to Rip’s past). Instead, they focus on this obsession of Ciara’s love for Ray and her love for Carter.
The whole show does not follow up on a continuous storyline; like its premise, it jumps around. (Get it, because they time travel incoherently.) In the previous episode, we were led to believe that the Hunters that followed Kronos (Mick) would be far deadlier and more of a challenging opponent.
Instead, we got a rehash of what was the third part to the "Back to the Future" movies and the Hunters only appeared in the show for 30 seconds or so. When they did appear, the whole crew aboard the wave-rider just said “screw it” to time-traveling rules and used their future technology. What made it so painful to watch was that throughout the episode the idea of not exposing the future technologies to the past was reinforced. In the last few minutes or so, the whole idea just collapsed in on itself, although the allusion to the "Men In Black" movies was kind of funny. (Nice one Snart).
The show’s baseline plot is to stop the rise of Vandal Savage and prevent him from taking over the world and killing Rip’s family. We the audience are so painfully reminded of this every episode because it seems that all of Rip’s monologues include this story (sometimes even in flashbacks). It is so painfully repeated at one point that I wonder if there is anything else driving this character to stop Savage.
The whole attempt to stop Savage seems like a shot in the dark. The show never really establishes a clear plot to stop the guy or how to even slow him down. Instead, every episode starts with some reconnaissance or intel that Gideon provides and they arrive at said time period and attempt to ruin Savage’s plans. Rinse and repeat and you have the majority of what the first season of "Legends of Tomorrow" has been.
That being said, not enough effort I feel is being put in to incorporate the DC television universe at all. I wish there would be some consistency and variety in the episodes. The dream would have all three shows running on the CW: "Arrow," "The Flash," and "Legends," and have the shows impact each other. Let events not completely crossover but impact another show or leave traces/remnants in the universe.
It would be great to see Rip mentioning Reverse Flash in a casual conversation or other characters in the universe being talked about. The hype of the show was there at the premiere but now a couple of months in I just don’t feel the vibe anymore. (See what I did there -- incorporation of another character that’s relevant.)
