The highly anticipated film, "Suicide Squad" was released in theaters this last Friday, but to the disappointment of many DC fans, the film was not well-received by critics, earning a rating of 26 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. One fan in particular was so upset by critics' reviews that he started a petition on Change.org to shut down Rotten Tomatoes.
Abdullah Coldwater, the person who started the petition, claimed that he started the petition for fun but shut it down due to the amount of negativity that resulted from it. Even though Coldwater himself started the petition in good fun, it doesn't change the fact that over 21,000 people signed it. A good portion of the signers were people ridiculing the absurdity of the petition, but there was also a portion of signers who thought that Rotten Tomatoes unfairly scored the DC movie. A good number of people from this group signed the petition before the movie even premiered. These hardcore fans were baffled as to how their beloved film could receive a less than stellar score.
Fans argued that Rotten Tomatoes is biased towards DC movies, claiming that the critics' scores differed from audience scores more greatly for DC movies than for Marvel movies, proving that DC movies were being unfairly critiqued.
First of all, Rotten Tomatoes isn't even the one responsible for giving out the scores. All the website does is tally up the scores and calculate the average rating so I don't know why people are coming after the website. Secondly, have fans ever considered that maybe the movie just wasn't that good? Except for "Batman v Superman," I've seen all of the movies shown above and I can say that the Marvel movies were just better in quality. I wanted to like "Suicide Squad." I was hyped up from all the advertisements and trailers. It actually seemed fun, and lighter in tone than the typical DC movie, so I was excited, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. The first half of the movie spent so much time introducing every member and their backstories, it just dragged on for so long. I know it was an origin story but "Deadpool" was also an origin story but it got straight to the action and that movie was great. Also, despite what the title suggests, the movie wasn't so much about a squad of criminals as it was about Margot Robbie's and Will Smith's characters. It wasn't that their performances were bad, but I thought the film was supposed to be about a group of people, not just the ones played by actors with the most star power.
You may not agree with my opinion, but that's the thing. Although your opinions don't necessarily line up with mine, that doesn't mean that you have to start a petition to have this article taken down. If you really liked this movie, then good for you, who cares what other people think about it. I doubt that a Tomatometer is going to change your opinion.
