Making the courageous decision to move out of state for college is one many young adults go through. We see different states as new adventures and opportunities. Once we get accepted to our colleges of choice, we count down the days until we can officially be on our way. And then we get there, and things got complicated. For those of you who aren't in the know on how our lives work, here is a day in the life of an out-of-state student.
1. Wake up confused
For the first 18 or so years of your life, you've been waking up in the same bed, for the most part. You knew exactly where to plant your feet once you rose, and you knew just how long you could go without turning the lights on before it became a safety hazard. Now you're in this new and confusing place where the sun doesn't rise as early and the floors are freezing and you're questioning life like, "Where am I, and where's my mom with breakfast?" And then you remember what's going on.
2. Spend all morning figuring out what to wear
It's no surprise that the climate in your new state of choice is different from what you're used to. But, you never realized just how different it was going to be. Your normal attire back at home is useless now, and you have to find anything that can be used as a layer -- whatever that may be.
3. Get lost any time you leave the house
Being in college is hard enough without having absolutely no idea where you are at all times. It took a long time to know your hometown like the back of your hand, and now you have to learn your ways around an entirely new place! (Pro tip: People suck at driving in every state.)
4. Get a craving for something that no longer exists where you live
Speaking from experience, there is absolutely nothing worse than starting to crave something that can only be found in the beautiful confines of your hometown. It's truly unfair for some companies to only exist in certain parts of the country because your love stretches far past state boundaries.
5. Miss one of your friends and realize they're really, really far away
Perhaps even sadder than wanting food that is out of reach is wanting to hang out with your friends and realizing it's impossible to see them. If only plane tickets were more easily accessible and affordable. There is always FaceTime, though!
6. Find something new and exciting in your new home
Sometimes being lost isn't such a bad thing. Wandering around a new city with no finish line makes for an interesting weekend and some super nice Instagram photos if we do say so ourselves.
7. Remember why you decided to move in the first place
Although moving away from home is a bold and intimidating process, it certainly comes with its fair share of rewards. Living in a new place is a tremendous experience that everyone should experience. The things you learn, the people you meet, and the opportunities you're presented with far outweigh your longing for your old neighborhood taco joint.
