A Day In The Life Of A Below-Average College Student
Courtney French

A day in the life of a college student -- this college girl to be specific. A sub-average, white female.

8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Hit snooze on my alarm and recede further into my blankets, cursing how cold my house is because we are too cheap to turn on the heat. Half an hour later I finally roll out of bed and attempt to make an elaborate breakfast in the 30 minutes I have before I have to leave for class. Now I’m in a rush to brush my hair, teeth, and maybe swipe on some mascara to make myself look less tired. Finally, I determine whether or not I need a rain jacket; usually in Washington, that’s always a definite yes.

10:00 – 12:00 p.m.

After I catch the bus with my roommate, we talk about our plans for the weekend and what we should make for dinner, interrupted by various ‘hi, how are you?’sto other college students up at this ungodly hour. Mobbing across campus to class with earbuds in and some angry rap music to intensify my RBF. Sitting in the back row so that I can take notes on my laptop and peruse social media when I get bored, only to remember how much I’m paying to be in class and stressfully transition to note taking again.

12:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Now comes the best part of any college student's day... DOGS! Yes, I walk dogs for a small amount of money every week. I don't think of it as a job; it's more of a hobby and stress reliever that I get paid for. I take the bus to a strange house, in a neighborhood where real adults live. I try not to look guilty, like I'm breaking into their home and stealing their dog. Even though I kind of am. I spend anywhere from one to four hours with adorable puppers outside, counting as both my workout and daily dose of being outdoors.

3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Homework, ugh, the bane of any college student's existence. I find it especially hard to find the motivation to do this, but once I get going it's not that bad. Getting distracted is something that happens to me quite easily, especially when my friends link/tag/send me cute dog videos all the time. The best place for me to study is in the basement of a building on campus because it's almost always empty down there, and I don't get cell reception within its thick, cold cement walls. I always have the problem of only focusing on a specific subject like geology (my fave, rocks are cool) and neglect the stuff like math or any of my business classes where I should be studying more for. I find it to be a better use of my time to nerd out on rocks than I do analyzing best business practices.

5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Hooray! I can neglect school for a little bit and see what my friends are up to! Depending on the day, I usually make dinner, tidy my room up, dance in the kitchen while I'm cooking and sending out mass snapchats and texts to hang out with friends. My roommate and I usually make dinner together or go to the gym around this time. If one of us is busy, we will just go solo on cooking, but have it ready and wait to eat with each other. If you do not have a cooking buddy, I highly recommend finding one, because cooking for one is hard and depressing. Find yourself a rad soul who likes a majority of the same foods as you, then get to cooking! There are more cookbooks that make "meals for two" than depressing singles cookbooks for one #SorryNotSorry.

8:00 - 10:00 p.m.

Also depending on whether or not I have school the next day, I am either making myself look like a real human-person, or I am spending 2 hours in the shower and then crawling into bed to catch up on all the cute dog videos I missed while I was doing homework. When getting ready to hang out, as a female, I usually like to start by doing my makeup and then helping my roommate do her makeup. We also try and figure out what to wear that's cute, comfy and practical for whatever weather Washington wants to throw at us. Comfort and practicality always come first to us. Then we continue to dance around our kitchen and living room before we head out to socialize with friends and then make our way home where we crawl into the same bed and cuddle each other. We are strong, independent women who don't need no man/woman in our lives other than each other. At the end of the day, it's just you and your roomie/bff that's going to be there.

Now that you know my schedule (ya creep), you know that I like to do me, and have fun while I can. Just like I assume you do, too! I'm sure we can all relate to this in some way.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
