Swipe, unlock, lock, repeat. Our generation has continuously become dependent on smartphones. Not only do we use our cell phones to call and text, but we use them heavily for email, to check our grades, FaceTime, to keep up with social media, GPS navigation, music, pictures, games, banking, weather, news, etc…and the list goes on. Have you ever stopped to consider what your day would look like if your smartphone vanished? Many visions resonate in my mind when I take a moment to picture the world today without smart phones.
Would we ever be able to make it to a new destination? Would we actually know how to read a map? I imagine there would be some frantic panicking happening because we never quite understood what the color-coded areas, the variety of lines and the scale of a map exactly meant. We are spoiled to a voice activating system, named Siri, that we trust with our life to verbally communicate to us exactly where to turn and what exits to take. Going somewhere unfamiliar would not be as mindless as it is today.
"Selfies" would sadly be a no no and Snapchat would be nonexistent. In fact, you would be looked at as narcissistic if you were caught trying to photograph yourself in public. Also, if you wanted to document memories with friends, the Canon would have to come along with you. Added responsibility would need to be taken in order to not only keep track of your phone, but also your camera since you couldn’t just store it away in your pocket to forget about until later.
Don’t you miss these? And how about brick breaker for your entertainment? Music would continue to need its own little device for storage. Also, our generation would like to say you're welcome for coming up with a way around buying music. Thanks to Spotify, we not longer have to worry about the viruses that came along with Frostwire and Limewire.
How would you know if class was canceled? Yes, unfortunately, we would have to roll of bed, stumble to class, read the sign on the door and then drive home aggravated from your professor making you go through that hassle. Nowadays, we've made it a habit of checking our email first thing in the morning for any kind of urgent news alerts.
Remember waking up never knowing the weather forecast? Sleep is valuable, and we don't have time to watch the weather channel before class. Without the app, we would just kind of guess and hope that Louisiana would actually stick to the expected conditions of the season.
Nevertheless, smart phones have their pros and cons. Without them, life would be a whole lot less efficient, but verbal communication would more much more effective. Today, we have all the entertainment and information we need in one small compact device at our fingertips. But, what would the world look like today if our smart devices suddenly vanished?
How dependent are you on your smart phone?
