It is football season, and as I like to call it these days-- band season. I have been dating a Marching Southerner for a year now, and that makes two band seasons we have been together. After last season, I wrote an article titled 8 Things You Know If You're Dating A Marching Southerner, and all of those statements still prove to be true.If you haven't watched one of their shows, I encourage you to get on YouTube and watch. You will be mesmerized. But, as I make my way through my second season, I have developed a list of eight more things that prove to be true while dating a Marching Southerner. Enjoy!
1. You start to understand music.
At least this proved true for me. I have never been involved with the band, and I never learned how to read music. That was until I got tired of not understanding what was going on within the show, so I asked. Now I know how to read music, what different cues mean, and can actually play a little bit of music. Before I started dating a Marching Southerner, I had no idea how music worked, and now I have gained tons of knowledge about what they do.
2. "Where's my music?"
Speaking of music, I cannot count how many times I have been asked: "Hey, where's my show music?" There have been numerous times we have searched for his music binder, just for it to be on the couch, or in his car.
3. "Hey, can you zip this?"
I don't know how many times I've zipped the jacket of his uniform up. It doesn't bother me, but I've heard it a million times.
4. "Wait, I need to dump out my shoes!"
Every single day after practice the shoes have to be dumped. Turf turds are a common sight in my house, because of the artificial turf they march on. I honestly feel bad for the Southerners because their shoes get stained black, and walking with those things in your shoes is not comfortable.
5. "Oh JSU? Don't yall have the Marching Southerners?"
Yes, we do. I am super proud of it too. I love watching them perform and I am proud this is something JSU is known for. People far and wide know who we are because of our band, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
6. Praising Jesus when practice gets canceled.
After months of practicing every day you savor when practice gets canceled. It allows you to be able to do something in the afternoon, and not worry about them going to practice. I love the afternoons I can eat supper with Chase and not worry about him having to go to practice.
7. I have a huge respect for the band.
I totally respect the Marching Southerners and what they do because I know how much work goes into it. I know how much work they put in for practice, and I respect the art that they bring onto the field. It takes weeks, and even months to put together their amazing show.
8. It just gets better and better.
As each marching season goes by, it just gets better. From watching the full show for the first time, all the way to supporting them through the grueling practices-- it just gets better. I wouldn't trade dating a Marching Southerner for the world.
