The word "Date" is defined by Merriam-Webster as "a social engagement between two persons that often has a romantic character." In 2016, dating has totally changed it's meaning and many people are forgetting what it means to actually go on a date. In 2015, the term "Netflix and Chill" showed exactly the priorities of millenniums who would rather lay in bed and watch reruns rather than going out and actually going on a date. Who would have thought that going to the movies would eventually be considered "old school"? People now meet on various dating apps rather than in person. Apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hot or Not, and Coffee Meets Bagel to name a few have gained popularity and teens and young adults are spending time swiping through possible love interests rather than being set up on blind dates or meeting people in person. According to the Huffington Post, the average Tinder user spends 77 minutes a day swiping yes or no. Here are some ideas for ways to break away from society's norms and enjoy date night a little more. Date more like 1950 and less like 2016.
1. Take a trip to the movies
Whether it's the newest blockbuster, an indie film at the local theater, or a trip to the drive-in. Get out of your pj's and go see a movie, give your DVR a break!
2. Try a new restaurant
Change up your diet and eat something besides Chipotle, search the internet for some new restaurants or ask a friend for a suggestion.
3. Get outside.
Take a hike, ride a boat, walk the dog. It's summer. Take advantage of the sunshine.
4. Don't act your age.
Think back to when you were a kid. What were some things you did that made you smile? Go to the roller skating rink, an amusement park or a museum. Take a walk down memory lane.
5. Leave your cell phones at home.
Yes, really.
6. Go on a group date.
Group dates or parlor dates were popular during the 1950's. Get some friends together and get a bite to eat or go to the mall.
7. Give texting a break and talk on the phone.
It only takes a little extra effort, consider even giving face timing or video chatting a try. Maybe even talk on a landline.. if you still have one.
