On Tuesday, September 5, Trump and his administration announced their decision to end the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), which is the Obama era initiative that provides protections for children of undocumented immigrants. On average, recipients of DACA, or Dreamers, moved to the United States around the age of 6 and have therefore known very little of or nothing about the country in which they were born.
In order to participate in the program, DACA recipients are thoroughly vetted and are required to attend school and/or find a job, and many have even chosen to pursue higher education. In addition, Dreamers pay taxes and have greatly contributed the United States' economy and overall economic growth. With that said, the ending program is not an issue of expense. In fact, ending the program would cost the country up to $200 billion dollars, which would be of no benefit to U.S. economy.
There are currently around 800,000 young adults who are DACA recipients and within the short time span of 6 months, their entire lives could very well be uprooted and thrown into chaos.
