Like many other comedy-lover addicts, I went to see Daddy’s Home this weekend. While, I’ll admit, it wasn’t my favorite Farrell movie, his face alone makes me laugh so, hey, no complaints here.
At one point in the movie, Wahlberg looks over to Farrell, amidst their power-tripping daddy problems and says “Look, let’s cut the sh*t.”
What simple advice Wahlberg suggests.
And as the New Year starts, I couldn’t think of a better resolution.
A little unconventional, I’ll admit, but probably the most practical and productive one I’ve come up with yet.
So, I’m suggesting one where you have to do absolutely nothing. In fact, you have to do less than you would normally do.
First Step: Cut the sh*t.
Last step: Repeat first step for the rest of your life and live happily ever after!
So how do we do this? To me, living in a college environment, I see a lot of sh*t in need of cutting.
1. Social media
Social media is a huge contributor to the impossible task of finding genuine people. Whether it’s arching your back to make your boobs and ass stick out or using Photoshop/Facetune to make your nose look smaller and your skin look tan, social media is a way for people to be the versions of themselves they wish they were. And what do I have to say to that?
…Cut the sh*t
I get it. Who doesn’t use filters when posting on Instagram and who doesn’t choose pictures that they think they look good in? But, I will NEVER understand some of the extremes people go to to get a few extra likes.
2. Gym Etiquette
There are countless numbers of times where I have watched a guy at the gym do one rep every 15 minutes and then spend the rest of their time adjusting their muscle tank and looking at girls’ asses. But I mean, can you blame them when girls walk in with a sports bra, booty shorts and full makeup?
Everyone….Cut the sh*t
The gym is something you do for yourself. If it’s a place to pick up girls or guys for you, that’s pathetic. You go in, do your business, and get out.
3. Hookup Culture
“You have the best body I’ve ever seen”, “Tell me about yourself, I really wanna get to know you”, “I am not looking for a girl that just wants to f**k.”
Oh my godddd….Cut. The. Sh*t.
Guys, I’m so sorry but how stupid do you think we are? For some reason, girls seem to have this reputation that we want you to wife us up after a hook up. No. And honestly if any girl leaves a hookup feeling that way, it’s probably because the guy pulled some line like the ones above so that we think we are more special than any other girl that you’ve hooked up with.
But guys, if you really don’t mean that, don’t say it! We're completely fine going home knowing that was meaningless for the both of us. Don’t start putting stuff in our heads to mess with us. And also, now anytime a guy really means what he’s saying, we're going to take it with, not just a grain, but a sh*t load of salt.
4. Texting
As Jimmy Tatro shows us in his video “Lost in Textlation,” girls and guys seem to have these games presented over text.
Examples of such games: You can’t respond for a certain amount of hours, you can’t put too many “y”s at the end of the “hey” but you also shouldn’t just put one (I mean, cmon show some interest right?) and also, you can’t text someone the day after you hooked up.
...Cut the sh*t.
I would loooove to know when these games were created because they are ridiculous. The most attractive quality a girl or guy can have is being straight up from the beginning about what this is. Don't add games for confusion, what's the point?
Anyways, there are so many different examples of the way people stray further and further away from being genuine, but those are some of the first ones to come to mind.
I believe there isn’t a better quality to have than being genuine. It means that admist the crazy societal pressures, you’re comfortable enough with yourself and cherish relationships with other people enough to be the real you, and only the real you.
So, although we all might be guilty of falling into some of these society-brainwashing actions sometimes, I think a good resolution to add to your list is to stop trying so hard to fit into the cookie cutter/perfect human society has created. Cut the sh*t and be yourself. It’s 2016 damnit.
