The first question people ask when I tell them I work in customer service is always, "Do you have any good stories?"
Yes. I definitely do.
Working in customer service requires a large amount of patience and understanding.
There are some times however, with certain people, where patience and understanding go right out the window. You just try your best to make the customer happy and move on with your life.
These are my best stories, and I promise they are all 100% true. I couldn't make this up if I tried.
1. A woman called up and told me her watermelon was rotten. She placed it on her table and it "exploded like a grenade." (Her exact words)
2. A customer got extremely angry that he had to pay for a drink he had already finished while waiting on line, and threw a twelve pack of iced tea at the store window, which then shattered and broke into a million pieces.
3. A customer who created an entire Microsoft Powerpoint slideshow to show me pictures of the lasagna he had cooked last night.
4. A woman who bought, cooked and ate a turkey for Thanksgiving but somehow wanted a refund the next day because there wasn't enough meat for her guests.
5. The man who asked if I could give him change, because he was going to buy drugs. When I awkwardly laughed that last part off, he said in the most serious expression I've ever experienced, "No, really. I'm buying drugs. Tonight."
6. The multiple random old guys who offer various things if they win the lottery from the tickets I print for them: cars, vacations, houses.
7. In New York State, there is a law that one person is allowed to cash in only $12 worth of bottle slips a day. This one guy came in, cashed in his $12 and left. About an hour later, he comes back. I tell him I can't cash anymore, since he already got his $12. He proceeded to try and convince me he was never there at all, and the man I helped before was a distant relative.
8. This story is quite possibly my best, but it isn't even customer service related. While helping some customers on a self scan machine, another customer ran out on me. They left with a whole wagon of unpaid groceries and I was devastated. I truly believed I was getting fired or suspended. A little while after the incident, the security guard informed me I had been set up, and asked me to watch the security video. The customers ran outside, where a school bus was waiting for them. They picked up the ENTIRE cart, put it in the back of the bus and sped away.
