Illusions that make us different

Culture Crash

There's an ignorant hubris that naturally engulfs our species with an unwavering loyalty to the patch of dirt upon which they happened to have been conceived. It's as if the country has invisible lines surrounding it. Offspring with a misguided sense of pride grow to accept those invisible lines as an indisputable reality. The individual more often than not is encouraged to develop faith in the regional deity of their conception, resenting all others who were led to sacred conclusions reinforced by the native populous of their own environments.

Culture is the soap of the mind. Local customs and traditions shackle the unique to a series of repetitious behaviors which stifle creativity in order to honor some misguided sense of familial duty that blind the youth to the infinite skyline of originality.

Family is but biology. Love requires no such prerequisite. Society instills an instinctual loyalty with no regard to reality that sometimes an asshole is just an a**hole and biological connections are simply random conclusions that pose no bearing on the near mechanical construct of social interaction.

Those who become aware of this runaway train of consciousness are the seraphim of true romance. The shining knights and selfless dames who build their bonds not of random biology but of discovered and embraced and nourishing shots of life. I struggle with and daringly reject the notion that the adventurous discoveries and flavors of life itself are to be governed by the outdated and worshiped deities blindly accepted as reality by the masses. It is these same antiquated ideas and beliefs that keep humanity separated by our webs of invisible lines because it is these same antiquated ideas and beliefs that lead us to consider ourselves different than each other. Perceiving ourselves as being different from one another, it's probably safe to say, is the main reason for most of our international conflict.

Have we let ourselves be reduced to agricultural packs of dimwitted beasts? Over what? Melanin.

The illumination of opportunity may never fall dim as long as the heart to rebel against the "because I said so" pattern of societal norms continues to exist and flourish in the bowels of the youthful and unique. Always beg the question, "why?" Never surrender to the notion that society cannot be different and that it cannot be experienced nor perceived in the limitless shades of a new light.

The path to progress is to dissolve the restraints of cultures born merely of repetition and embrace of evolution of the mind. Despite the romance of the notion, the seeds of change do not require the selfless martyr to plant, as many cultures may lead us to believe. Change begins as a tiny ember in the hearts of individuals that not just believe but know society, as a whole, has the potential to improve. With each rebellious inquiry seeking to inspire others to light their own flames, may we one day marvel at a blaze so bright we can finally see what has been right in front of us all along.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
