A Culture, Not A Season

Why has having a servant heart become a seasonal tradition and not a cultural practice?

I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year - Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens words are lilting and whimsical, floating effortlessly off our tongues as we begin this Christmas season. Here is where we start to open up our cupboards, dust off some canned food and donate it to our local food bank. Perhaps if we're feeling particularly generous, we may cook up a meal and serve it to someone less fortunate. However, after all the presents have been opened, the turkey eaten, and our extended relations exited; we all have a tendency to close that service-oriented function of our heart only to be reopened again once this magical time of year comes around.

Why is this

Please don't think me a cynic, I believe in the heart of every man, woman, and child there is deep rooted good will. But something I think we, a 21st-century modern culture, have created is a season of giving rather than a culture of giving. A season devoted to peace on earth and good will toward our fellow man. However, what should be created is a passionate culture of year-round goodness to our neighbor and taking care of the least of our brothers.

Charity is the glue by which all other aspects of our lives are held together; it guides our life in ways we may not even acknowledge. Doing good for others, especially others who cannot do so for themselves, not only benefits the person's way of life in that particular moment, but warms and lightens the heart of the servant. In this crazy, concerning, and confusing world, don't you believe we should do best to promote love and good will to all, for as long as possible?

So try it this year.

Try loving and giving of yourself past December 25th this year. Live Mr. Dickens' words, and keep Christmas alive in your heart all year round. See where you find yourself, this time, next year!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
