The Crunchy, Earthy Life Is The Good Life

Flower children, tree huggers, neo-hippies, granola people...us crunchy people have a lot of names and just as many stereotypes. We’re not all a bunch of un-showered hippies who shove opinions down others’ throats. Far from, actually. The earthy, crunchy lifestyle is something much greater – it’s a way of thinking, living and being at peace with yourself and the earth. It’s about simplifying and reconnecting with nature.

We’re Planet Earth’s biggest fans. We think composting is the coolest thing. We know sustainable agriculture is the future. We constantly tell our friends “Don’t throw this out, it’s recyclable!”.

We know global warming and climate change is all too real, and we probably have a shirt, poster or bumper sticker with the slogan “Save the planet!” on it.

You can most definitely find us lounging in a hammock, on top of a mountain or canoeing down a river. Yeah, we dig nature.

Our ideal morning is drinking green tea while jamming to some indie music.

Our houses are full of plants and windows are just about always open.

We often wonder why marijuana is illegal, yet alcohol is not.

Drinking out of a mason jar is totally the norm – we’ll pass on the plastic.

We often wonder why people want large, glamorous houses when tiny houses exist (Less house = more nature).

Heavily processed foods are something out of our worst nightmare. We’ll stick with our homemade kale chips, granola and kombucha, thanks.

There’s a good chance any of us crunchy folk you meet are either vegetarian, vegan or stick to local free range animal products.

Nothing beats the excitement of the weekly farmers’ market.

We prefer the comfortable life over the expensive life.

We ditch the shoes whenever possible, but if we must wear them, we settle for our trusty Chacos or Birkenstocks.

We’re happiest when we're under trees.

OK, sometimes we hug them, but more than that we worship them - we love them. When you fall in love with trees you fall in love with the planet and all its living things.

It seems that everyone these days has become separated from nature, from trees and from their roots (tree pun intended). We’ll be nature loving, tree hugging people until the day we die, and we couldn’t imagine it any other way.

The crunchy life is the best life. Us open minded, self-aware and earthy people are some of the happiest you’ll meet. We’re conscious of our actions and dig natural sources. We’re into living the real, not synthetic, life, and we welcome each day as a new opportunity to learn, grow and connect with the world around us.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
