There have been rumors about Disney Pixar's first lesbian couple in the new animated film, Finding Dory. The rumors began when people noticed a scene where two women were walking together in a park.
It's safe to say people overreacted and definitely made some assumptions based on our society's lesbian stereotypes. At the premier of Finding Dory, Ellen DeGeneres, the hilarious voice behind Dory, shut these rumors down.
"...it's two women pulling a stroller, which I didn't even notice and one of them has short hair and uh, apparently if you have short hair you're a lesbian and I did not know that was the rule, you should tell Robin Wright that... there's a lot of women you should tell..., so no there's no lesbian couple, I don't think that's the case..." -DeGeneres
Although the rumors of Disney Pixar's first lesbian couple have been squashed, it brings a great conversation to the table; when will LGBT couples make their debut? Same-sex marriage was finally legalized in all 50 U.S. states last June and Disney Channel introduced their first lesbian couple on "Good Luck Charlie" this January. Change is happening, but the safety and happiness of LGBT's are still on the line.
We are all familiar with the tragic mass shooting that took place at a gay night club in Orlando last week. This was not a random event, it was carried out by someone with misguided and hateful judgements about the LGBT community. Incorporating gay couples in major TV shows and movies would be strong step towards improving social equality in America. Disney Pixar has a massive audience, most of whom are very young. I think it is safe to say that every child in the United States has see a Pixar movie. When I was a kid, seeing that cute little lamp jump on the I in Pixar, I knew I was about to watch a fire movie. If we can show children that all relationships are "normal," they will grow up accepting all relationships, not just the ones found in their households.
Major film companies like Disney Pixar should understand the power they have to create harmony in our country. If we all make an effort to accept one another, imagine the society we could live in.
