Create A Low-Budget Summer With These 8 Ideas

Sometimes the best summer activities cost us nothing but time.

Summer is a time where one's happiness is at an all time high and one's bank account is at an all time low. Over the years, my bank account has not allowed me to splurge on big ticket items to make my summer fantastic. However, I have found a number of things to do that cost next to nothing that also supply memories that will last longer than my summer will.

1. Go for a hike

Most parks allow for free entry into their nature preserves but if they don't, the entry cost is very minimal. Going for a hike, or just a walk around your neighborhood with a buddy makes for a great way to get outside and have some good conversation.

2. Set up a picnic at the beach

Go with your family or friends to the nearest sandy beach with some snacks, a Bluetooth speaker, and maybe a volleyball to hit around! Have everyone in the group bring their favorite snack along with their beverage of choice and you'll have happy people with happy and full bellies for the rest of the day.

3. $5 Tuesdays at Marcus Movie Theater

This idea is more so for the rainy days we are bound to have this summer. Every Tuesday at participating Marcus Cinemas, you're able to see any movie at any time for $5. This is the perfect opportunity to get a group of friends together, hit up a dollar store for snacks and smuggle said snacks into a blockbuster movie without busting your wallet.

4. Tie-Dye an old t-shirt

Do you have an old white t-shirt from a school event just lying around? Jazz it up with a pop of color! This is a very inexpensive way to make a really cool piece of clothing. You also don't have to be artistically inclined in order to make something gorgeous!

5. Read that book you've been dying to read

Now that you'll have a lot more free time on your hands with school being done and over with, you can finally crack open a good book! Make time for yourself to relax while getting lost in a world that's not your own.

6. Free admission at Milwaukee Museums

If you're looking to go on an adventure in the city, the Milwaukee Art Museum and Milwaukee Public Museum offer free admission to all its exhibits on the first Thursday of every month.

7. Make that recipe you saw in a Facebook video or Pinterest post

If your stomach is telling you to make a mug brownie, make that mug brownie.

8. Go for a long drive with no particular destination

Make a dope playlist, pack a few pillows and blankets, and hit the road. Driving into the backroads of your hometown with your closest friends always makes for a good time. It's memories like these long drives, exploration in nature, and having some free fun in the sun that will last for every summer after this one.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
