This past weekend I had the opportunity to support Women’s Heart Health at Alpha Phi’s 8th annual Red Dress Gala. Olivia Wydajewski, vice president of campus affairs, put together the most amazing night in honor of our philanthropy. All of our beloved Alpha Phis joined together in the color red to support those with heart complications. We all put in lots of work in order to have the most amazing night ever. And, our hard work paid off.

I started my day off getting my hair done, putting makeup on, fitting into my dress and helping set up the decorations at the venue. The gala took place at Hotel Vetro, right in down town Iowa City. Red/pink/white overwhelmed the entire place. Flowers, balloons and streamers added the perfect touch to the night. There were plenty of places for pictures, which is perfect for sorority girls. We can’t forget about what truly made the night a success- desserts! Desserts galore. We had over 5 cakes, cookies, alpha phi customized macaroons, donuts, cake pops èclairs, etc, The food at dinner was delicious, too- there was a choice between chicken and pasta.

The night started with taking photos, finding our table assignments and viewing the baskets for the silent auction. The items included vacation essentials, workout apparel, all things glamor, date night, Iowa Hawkeye game day necessities and more. As the night went on tears were shed, and awards and speeches were given by our president, vice president, and special guests who have dealt with heart issues. A senior slideshow ended the evening.

All together the night was a total success. I am so lucky to be a part of the most amazing girls supporting something so near and dear to so many people’s lives. I can’t imagine myself in a different sorority or at a different school. These girls are amazing and show me that each and every day. I am so proud of Olivia, along with the rest of Alpha Phi for raising so much money for a cause that is so prevalent in today’s world. I love you all! I am excited to continue raising money for women’s heart health along with three more Red Dress Galas!!

xoxo Sam

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
