Cancer takes the lives of 20,000 people in the world each and every day. That is a scary number, and the reason why the word cancer itself tugs on my heart every time I hear it. The challenges one may face in the event of having this disease are unimaginable, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It's something that affects not only the person fighting it, but also their family. When I heard about Joey Feek's battle with cancer and her story, I felt nothing but heartbreak.
The beautiful Joey Feek was diagnosed with cervical cancer in June 2014, about three months after the birth of her little girl, Indiana, who has Down syndrome. She underwent several surgeries and seemed to have overcome the disease, but it returned even stronger than before. On Oct 23, Rory Feek announced in his blog post that Joey's Stage IV cancer is spreading, despite aggressive chemotherapy she went through over the summer. She returned back home to their Tennessee farm to spend time with family, and has decided to stop all chemotherapy treatments in order to spend time with her one-year-old daughter. She is so weak that she has trouble leaving her bedroom, and spends much of her time in bed except for the occasional trip to the porch to sit on the swing.
In an interview with Taste of Country, Rory Feek, Joey's husband, says, “And the conversation on our swing turned from tears to joy. From the porch we all smiled because we knew in that instant, that no matter what happens, Joey will always be with us. She’ll be in our little Indiana’s smile...and in our hearts forever.”
Not only will she be in their hearts forever, but they will never forget her voice and her smile. In a song reassuring her husband of life after she's gone, Joey Feek sings a beautiful song titled "When I'm Gone" that will surely bring tears to many eyes.
Please say a prayer for a miracle for Joey Feek and her family during this difficult time.
