As an avid lover of makeup, I am always looking for new products to try out. When I first heard about Kylie Jenner launching her cosmetics business, 'Kylie Cosmetics,' I wasn't too interested until I saw the everyone online losing their minds over a tube of liquid lipstick and a lip pencil. At first, I wasn't aware that she only restocked the lip kit's on certain days, and if you weren't online at least 10 minutes before the time she was releasing them, you were basically out of luck. After finally getting my hands on one and receiving it, I was overall pretty happy with what I received. However, there are a few minor issues I have with the product.
The first lip kit I was able to get my hands on was 'Kourt K,' which is a dark purple shade. It is suggested that you line your lips with the lip liner that comes in the kit and then fill them in completely before applying the liquid lipstick. I followed the instructions exactly and for the first hour or two, it looked great. I noticed that after a while, it started to flake and peel off my lips. Of course, I wasn't expecting it to stay perfectly but I didn't expect it to start feeling grainy and disgusting on my lips. After using a makeup wipe to remove the product, I noticed that it had stained my lips and the area around my lips and I had to really scrub them to get it off. I have used a few of the other shades and even the lighter colors seem to stain when you take them off. Besides that, I didn't really have any other problems with the brand, until recently.
I've been seeing many articles and posts online accusing Kylie's lip kits of using the same or a similar formula to that used in 'ColourPop's' liquid lipsticks. It has been brought to the attention of consumer's that Kylie's lip kits get manufactured in the same factory as Colourpop's liquid lipsticks and that most of the color's Kylie has released can almost be matched identically with colors from Colourpop. Apparently both companies products are made in Spatz Laboratories, which is probably why both products have almost identical formulas.
After doing a little more research, I found out that Colourpop was created by a company called Seed Beauty. In a recent interview, Seed Beauty confirmed that they own Colourpop as well as Kylie Cosmetics; they called them "sister companies." The following are two quotes from the Seed Beauty website:
"In the 'old way,' too much time and money are spent before the brand’s launch building a product/brand that most likely will not be accepted in its first generation format by real consumers."
"The focus is on SPEED, not perfection. Perfection comes from creating as many trials as possible."
Basically, what they are trying to say is that it doesn't matter the quality of the products. All that matters is how fast they can put out a product. Personally, I think this is an awful way to run a business considering the price of the lip kits.
These quotes are probably the reason why the new shades are different than the older shades. It seems they have changed the formula and even changed the labels on the bottom of the packaging.
It is clear to see that the new product is more pigmented and pinker than the first formula.
Keep in mind: I am not trying to bash Kylie Cosmetics, I'm just trying to bring some issues I've noticed to your attention.
