Dear Little Sister,
Time has flown by and I can’t believe that you’re already entering your senior year of high school. This is such a memorable year for you and I hate how I can’t be there to experience all of it with you. I wish I could be there for you, but believe me, you don’t need me anymore—trust yourself.
I wish I could be there to help you with your hair and makeup for the homecoming dance—except you don’t need makeup to define who you are. You’re beautiful on the inside, leaving the outside of you glowing. You understand how makeup is just for fun, but not necessary needed in order to show the world your amazing self.
I wish I could go dress shopping with you for your prom dress. However, you have developed a style that is truly all your own and don’t truly need my opinion. I admire how you’ll take risks with your fashion choices. I love how you go through my closet while I’m away, grab a top that I didn’t bring with me, and then snap me a picture of your chic new outfit. I’ll be so jealous of your outfit that it’ll make me regret not bringing that shirt with me!
I wish I could be there to cheer you on as you perform in your last season of color guard. You have been to nearly every performance of mine and I absolutely wish I could see every show of yours. Pictures of you performing will never do you justice, but I know you don’t need me there to win over an audience. You performance with a sass that is entirely your own and you radiate energy that draws people in. You can win over any audience with your charming personality!
I wish I could be there when you’re stressing about school, about grades, about people, and whatever other challenging events come up. I wish I could give you the biggest hug and reassure that you can do this. I already know you can do whatever you set your mind to and now it’s finally time that you learn that for yourself. Your work ethic is unmatched. You know your limits so you don’t burn out, but you still push to give every activity you’re involved in everything that you can. You do this all while maintaining your GPA and never losing sight of your friends and family along the way. You, my dear, are one of a kind and can do the impossible.
Furthermore, I wish I could be there for all the silly, happy, ridiculously hilarious, abs-hurting fits of laughter, memorable moments that will no doubt make up your final year of high school.
Finally, I wish I could be there for the culmination of what all thirteen of your schooling has been leading up to: your graduation! Dawning a white cap and gown, I know you’ll walk across the stage as a woman of poise and purpose. I will be proud of all you have accomplished and will accomplish in the future… But guess what? I’ve already decided that I’m flying home to be there for you! Don’t worry little sister, at the end of the year, I’ll make sure to be there to give you the best hugs only a proud big sister can give. And for every moment between now and then…there’s texting, Facebook, Instagram, snapchat, skype, google hangout, the classic phone call, snail mail….
Love,
Alyssa
P.S. I know you don’t need me now, but I’ll always be here for you. XO
