Everyone is always saying how they want to be themselves, but never really seem to always follow through with that statement. Those who cosplay, however, have been proven to be happier, and often healthier people. Here are just a few reasons why cosplay might be right for you.
1. Meet People With Similar Interests
You meet tons of new people who like the same kind of stuff you do. Cosplayers, in general, are known to be pretty friendly and outgoing people and have no problem walking up to each other and complimenting each other's costumes. It doesn't even matter if you don't cosplay to a convention (whether it be an anime convention or a comic book convention), you'll still find people dressed up as your favorite characters from movies, comics, games, or animes.
2. Cosplay Means More Fun
Cosplay literally translates into costume play. The people who cosplay normally have no problem posing, or possibly even acting out scenes from whatever source material they pulled the character from. These people are usually insanely creative, sometimes spending months or even years on their costumes while others buy their things second hand. No matter what anyone is cosplaying as, it's common knowledge that they're probably having a blast.
3. Equality All Around
In the cosplay world, it doesn't matter what someone's skin tone or gender is. Literally, the sky's the limit. Most cosplayers build their costumes themselves, and as a result, you'll find fans from all walks of life dressing up as their favorite character. The world of cosplay is for everyone. Nothing should ever get in the way of someone showing off their creative genius, regardless of skin tone, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnic background. When they're dressing up, they're stepping into someone else's shoes.
4. Stress? More Like Bless
Most people who build their own costumes only feel stress right before whatever convention they're planning on attending. However, the convention atmosphere has normally been described as a euphoric feeling. With so many people around who share similar interests, it's easy to forget about whatever had been stressful to begin with. Costume building isn't easy, but it's incredibly rewarding in the long-run with all of the praise and recognition that comes with bringing someone else's favorite character to life.
Maybe instead of spending tonight binge-watching the latest shows on Netflix, you consider who you could cosplay as. What fictional characters do you care passionately about? Do you like them enough to bring them to life?
