Due to my natural spontaneity, my best friend and I decided to take a weekend trip to detox ourselves from social media and technology. It felt necessary in the midst of all society's current craziness.
We both agreed to leave our phones in the glovebox of my car once we reached our destination. Although we both had our phones on during the drive up, we barely used them, with the exception of blasting our favorite throwback playlist. There was a lot of reminiscing that took place during the drive that fed our souls pure joy and contentment. To me, it felt as if we were 12 years old again, laughing without a care in the world. When we got there, we did as we had promised and locked up our phones. In all honesty, it was extremely intimidating to be unplugged entirely for the whole weekend.
We began our adventure by going out to dinner; an entirely new experience with no phone, if I might add. Later in the evening, just as any teenage girls would do at a sleepover, we played a very intense round of scrabble as the green masks dried on our faces. (I won, but that's beside the point). The next morning, we drove out to what was a very snowy, windy beach. While typically we would have left in an instant upon seeing such brutal conditions, this time we didn't seem to mind hail being pelted at our icy cheeks. The sound of the air whistling and her camera shutter flying off rapidly infiltrated my ears. Suddenly, we both felt a rush of calm and comfort as we realized what an incredible experience this had been for the both of us.
There was a newly gained appreciation for each other as the weekend progressed. It felt as if I were being introduced to my best friend of nearly 10 years, all over again. We connected in ways I never thought were possible. Unfortunately, our trip had to come to a close. We packed our things, and headed for my car. Part of me didn't want to open that glove box, because I knew what would be waiting for me as I turned my cell phone back on. It seemed almost serendipitous that I was the driver on our way home. That way, I was hardly tempted to look at my phone.
The drive home was quiet, yet peaceful, and it was apparent we had both genuinely appreciated our time with each other.
