Why You Should Write for the Odyssey at DePauw

Recently, I received the position as Editor-in-Chief for the DePauw Odyssey!! I am so thankful and excited for this experience. With that, I am trying to recruit more people to our Odyssey Team. There’s definitely more pros than cons!! It’s only an article once a week with no minimum or maximum length. Here’s why you should consider joining the team; all are always welcome!

1. Write What You Want.

This is one of the best and my favorite reasons! No one is putting restrictions and requirements on what you can submit. Write about something interesting that happened during your week, create a list about any topic, make a photo story, or just write your opinion on something! Get creative with it. There are very few limitations, we accept most things; this is targeted to a young adult crowd so a lot of articles relate to the audience. It’s pretty free-willed. No one enjoys being told what to do, and especially what to write about!! Here..no one will!!

2. A Resume Booster.

And what better reason do you need?! As college students, we’re always looking for ways to build our resume. This looks great, especially since it involves a national network. Having writing experience is always something you could use and something that companies will appreciate.

3. Improves Writing.

There’s no better way to improve your writing other than by writing! Simple as that. While you may think you’re not the best writer, you won’t get any better if you don’t practice. So might as well practice in an area where you’re not graded, rather than when it comes to writing a paper. With time, you’ll notice your writing skills improving.

4. Your Work is Published.

You don’t even have to be professional to get your work published! It’s actually one of the best things seeing your name underneath an article. Especially when others are sharing and enjoying it! It’s accomplishing. All you have to do is google your name and your profile will show up with all your articles listed.

5. Easy Going and Not Time Consuming.

Right now, we don’t even have meetings. It’s all individual. While in the future, we may set up to meet once a month, but for right now it’s all through email communication. All you have to do is write an article once a week and submit it to be edited. The process is pretty simple. Depending on the content of the article, you can usually get it done in under 30 minutes! Especially when there’s no length requirement!

6. You Get to Vent to the Public.

Have a topic you're passionate about? Want to vent about a crazy ex boyfriend/girlfriend? Complain how difficult college is? Or why you love going out? All these options work. When you’re interested and have an opinion about a topic, it makes a great article. It gives you a chance to express your voice in a creative and unique way.

7. You Can Make Some Money.

And all college students could use a little bit of this. If your article gets the most views of the week compared to the rest of the team, then you get $20. And now, if your article reaches a certain number of views you can make 100-1,000 dollars. Bonus!

8. We Want YOU!

We’re in the process of growing our team, so if you’re interested, or know anyone who might be, you can apply online! Or email me and I will send you the link. It’s a pretty easy application, and you can start soon after. We’re always looking for writers, there’s no maximum! So apply apply apply.

If you have any questions, please let me know or contact anyone else on the team. We will be more than happy to help. Thanks and hopefully we’ll be hearing from some of you soon!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

College without friends is like peanut butter without jelly.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
