The year of 2016 has been a quite unfortunate one. All of the recent tragedies and deaths have placed a weight on everyone's hearts. Talk of hate and fear in America is rising. There are terror attacks in foreign countries. This all seemed to be muffled in the media by the conveniently released Pokemon GO game. Each of these recent events have a lesson to teach us. Take a moment with me and let's see if we can learn a thing or two from recent events.
The most melancholy events that have been happening over time are the killings as a result of police brutality. This has outraged millions of American citizens and has sparked hundreds of rallies and activists calling for equality. Somewhere along the lines of what was originally a peaceful cause, turned into increasing anger and fighting. All we see on the media nowadays is negativity and turmoil. Everyone wants to change the world but at what cost? It's terrible to see a goal of unification tearing the people of a nation apart instead of bringing them together.
I've heard a lot of theories. It seems everyone has a different theory for everything. These include but are not limited to the media leaving out information and controlling our perception, BLM and ALM only existing for dominance, and even a theory on how the government is hoping for us to start acting more violent that way they can enact martial law. These views are not my own and the theories make people grow in worry and paranoia. This paranoia has risen tension between the different groups of activists and supporters.
Then, there is Pokemon. It has only been a week since its release and the game is already more popular than any other phone application. Pokemon GO is an augmented reality phone game that utilizes a GPS system to track the player and display Pokemon near the player's location. This game heavily emphasizes that the player must go out, walk around, and play with friends. There have also been several reported accidents associated with the game. These were only caused by people not paying attention to their surroundings which the game stresses on the main screen. The game has brought people all over communities together in pursuit of a common goal to catch these pocket monsters.
The local news took a surprising turn going from bad to straight up weird. The saddest part is that is took a card game and television show from the 90s to unite a group of people. In the midst of hate, anger, and bigotry we have a reason more than ever to unite ourselves. The reason for the unity is much more important than a Gyarados; it is for the future peace of our country and possibly even the world.
