You go into college knowing what you're going to do. Then one day, something happened and changed your plans completely. Maybe you've considered changing your major halfway through college, or maybe you didn't get into your major and now you're forced to choose something else. Whatever the situation may be, I want you to know it's okay to be confused.
College is all about exploring who you really are. Just because you come into college knowing what you want to major in doesn't mean you have to stick with it. You might switch it because you realized it's not what you thought it was or you may have found interest in something else. According to USA TODAY, 80% of college students change their major at least once, so don't feel like this is out of the ordinary.
There are so many like you, who need to take a step back and reconsider what you want. Sure, it's more convenient to change it early on, but who cares? At the end of the day, it's your future. Don't let "convenience" stop you from changing it. What's a few extra semesters catching up in a course you actually enjoy, compared to the rest of your life having a degree in a subject you didn't really want.
If you're forced to change your major because of requirements you didn't meet, you need to follow what your heart tells you. I know it's cliché, but I promise this is the best way to go about things right now. Take time to gather your thoughts. Remind yourself what you are passionate about and what makes you happy. Start from there.
If there is absolutely nothing else you are interested in and you still want to stay in the major that you got denied in, move schools before you start to resent the one you currently attend. If that's too much to do, try finding a major that might go hand in hand with the one you wanted. Sometimes employer's don't even care about what your degree is in, they just care that you have one. The last thing you want to do is immerse yourself into something new that you don't even care about.
Going a new route can be intimidating especially if it wasn't your first choice, but make the best out of it. Yeah, this means you'll have to create change in your life, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing! I know it's been stressful. I would tell you "things happen for a reason", but that's not the truth. If you want something, you go get it. You're young with the whole world in front of you, don't sit in a class you can't stay awake in. Invest your time, money and experience on what you enjoy.
