Throughout my entire freshman year of college I struggled with finding the right major. I wanted to find something I would be interested in, but I also knew that I needed to be practical. I felt like I was changing my mind every day, there were so many options. During my freshman year I thought that I was going to go for the most practical option and be a business major, but I hated all of my classes. It was so hard to be motivated to study and do assignments when I wasn't learning anything that I was interested in.
During the first semester of my sophomore year I took a communication class and loved the topics that we were learning about. I found that I actually wanted to pay attention in class and it wasn't as hard to get motivated to do assignments. While I was taking the communication class I realized that business was not for me and I decided to declare my major as communication. I have always believed that if I am going to have to put a lot of effort into something, it should be something I enjoy. I was beyond excited to finally declare a major where I felt that I could be happy with my classes. Since declaring my major I have been much more interested in what I am learning and it reflects in my grades as well. Studying is much easier if you have an interest in understanding what you are learning.
Even though I enjoy my classes, I find a lot of negativity surrounding me. Every class I am taking is filled with people that do not want to be there. The only thing people in my classes talk about is how bored they are, and how they don't want to do any of the work. I'm definitely not saying I love to do my homework or that I enjoy taking exams, but I do really enjoy going to most of my classes. The topics I am studying are really fascinating to me and it makes going to class seem like less of a task or more something that I want to do.
My advice to anyone reading is to find something that makes you happy. Even if you have taken a practical route with your major, minor in something that interests you, or fill a general education requirement with a class you will like. Take the classes that are interesting to you, it will make the academic side of college more enjoyable and will contribute you a happier you.
