Kindergarten classrooms. Movie theaters. Protest rallies. These locations, along with many more have become the setting for unimaginable tragedy in America. It was in these places that innocent lives were lost after being gunned down. In wake of recent events, I'd like to make a confession. I am a registered Republican, and I am for gun control. While I do not believe that the party system should mold your beliefs, I do find myself outnumbered within my party based on this belief.
Because of their typically conservative nature, the Republican party has become the party of anti-gun control. While this may have been an OK standpoint 25 years ago, the party needs to reevaluate. When you actually look at what gun control is, you learn that it is very much for the safety and freedom for everyone.
Gun control is not asking for a lot. It is not asking to take away all of everyone's guns. It is not asking you to give up your protection. It is not asking you to stop your hunting trips. It is not asking to sacrifice any freedoms. In fact, by not having gun control laws, Americans are at a much higher risk of sacrificing their freedom. At what point will enough be enough? When are Americans going to realize there is a serious problem in this nation?
Some gunmen decide to do what they do because of religion, and others because of race. Some are just mentally unstable. The common denominator in all of these attacks, however, is the fact that these people had access to automatic, military grade weapons. Why does the general public need access to weapons like this?
