A glimpse at the life you wish you had

Confessions From The Oldest Triplet
Ashley Eisenmenger

People are always interested to find out that I’m a triplet. There’s something about having two other people that look remotely like you that gets people excited. I for one, think it’s pretty great and after reading this article you might even wish you were a triplet too.

We finish each other’s sentences… I mean if we try really hard it works…sometimes…okay, not really at all, but there have been a few magic moments where we’ve kind of done this.Trust me, when it happens it’s hard not to contain our excitement and play it cool like it’s something that we do in our sleep.

People confuse us all the time. First of all, we aren’t identical, but that hasn’t stopped people from switching up our names. When we were younger it was like we could switch places. “Hey, Kailey, will you take my geometry test for me? The teacher won’t notice.” (I can dream, right?)

We can secretly read each other’s minds. I love this one because I have a running joke with my sisters that if this comes up in public we’re all always thinking about tacos. The reactions are priceless, but unfortunately if my sisters aren't thinking about tacos I’m powerless in the mind reading department.

The order in which we were born is a common conversation starter too. I’m the oldest which apparently means that my extra sixty seconds on this earth is supposed to make me significantly more wise and knowledgeable. I’d love to say that we're all on an equal playing field, but seriously, I’m the best because I’m the oldest.

“You’ve basically got your own (insert team sport here) team, that’s got to be awesome.” If we were all athletically gifted in the same ways this would be great, but since we can’t all be good at everything, except for me of course, we’ll have to settle for not winning all of the three-on-three basketball tournaments out there.

Sometimes I forget to mention I’m a triplet and when I casually bring it up people freak out like I’ve left them in the dark on this huge part of my life or something. I grew up in a small town and went to a small high school. Everyone knew me and if they didn’t know my name they knew I was “one of the triplets”. I never had to tell anybody, but once I graduated high school it wasn’t common knowledge. Because of that, I often unintentionally deprive people of that little piece of information. I’m still terrible about doing it and people still freak out; some things will never change.

People assume we’re supposed to dress alike. What’s funny about this is we had a lot of similar clothes in high school and more often than not at least two of us would get ready to leave the house wearing the same shirt. We would then argue about who should change their shirt because, of course I always had it on first. On the bright side, if we ever need an impromptu Halloween costume we’ve got the triplet look down to a tee.

One of the many perks to being a triplet is on our birthday we have three desserts. Yup, three because of course we can’t all choose one thing that makes us happy. That would be way too easy. We’ve got to milk this triplet thing for all it’s worth.

All of this being said; I love my sisters, and I love being a triplet. I love the questions and the comments. I love pretending I can read their minds – FYI they’re both thinking about tacos as you read this. I love trying to act like we’re the best three (wo)man team on the block. Real talk: we are, it’s okay to be jealous of our awesomeness. I love how different we are, but how we have key things that connect us (other than sharing a birthday). I wouldn’t trade my better thirds for anything.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
