As a work-study student, I feel very fortunate to be able to work for at least part of my tuition. Admittedly, there are a few odd experiences one encounters when having work study.
I personally work in one of the departments, basically as a secretary's assistant- my job consisting of running errands, scanning files, making copies, working on the budget, etc. In all honestly, I sometimes look like Jim Carrey in the GIF above, just in slow motion.
*Not all of these confessions apply to my own feelings, some are what other students have expressed to me*
Now! On to the 10 Confessions Of A Work Study Student!
1. You feel like part of the CIA or FBI with the confidential information you deal with. There is quite literally a contract you have to sign.
2. You overhear office gossip and have to pretend you didn't -- sounds like a movie cliche, doesn't it?
3. You either love or hate your boss, but mainly love, since they like you enough to have hired you, which says something about your character.
4. Shh, don't get caught on any forms of social media or your phone. Or just don't use them?
5. 75 percent the time, you'll end up doing homework, since another work study student did most of the work already, or there is nothing to do in general.
6. Internet Explorer -- enough said.
7. You learn to be more patient with people, especially students when they ask you for help when your boss isn't in the room.
8. Some jobs, like security jobs, have been described to me as basically babysitting a building.
9. You have a unique chance to bond with and potentially impress professors. It's fantastic, if you happen to be working in a location relating to your major/intended major.
10. Real-life work experience! Hurrah! Just a bit too similar to working in a cubical and feeling a "case of the Mondays."
