"What are you going to do with your life?"
The infamous question that many poli-sci majors hear all too often. A common misconception many outsiders make is that we just chose this major thinking it's an easy way through college. However, to those of us who are truly committed to this field of study, it can mean so much more. Majoring in poli-sci may not guarantee us a job after four years of college like a nursing major can, but we often have a larger goal in our head that we are looking to pursue with our degree.
What more people should realize is that the poli-sci majors of today are the future leaders of our country. It is us who devote our whole college experiences to studying, learning and memorizing the laws of our country so that one day we can run it. When life makes you question your choice of major, I think it's really important to take a step back and remember why you chose it and why it means so much to you. Poli-sci is the study of politics and power as it is in our country, and those of us who are proud enough to call ourselves poli-sci majors understand the importance.
I think it's also important to mention that poli-sci majors are following their passion. We aren't choosing this major for the potential salary after graduating [unless we continue on to law school to further our education and student debt], but instead, we are studying the laws and politics of our country simply because it fascinates us.
A poli-sci degree can bring a wide range of jobs, and you aren't just locked into one. We are the future lawyers, judges, representatives, senators and possibly even presidents of the United States, and if that isn't something to be proud about, I don't know what is. I don't think there are a lot of poli-sci majors across the country anymore, probably because it is a dying field of study. I can only hope it begins to come back to life and that more young Americans realize this too is a way to serve and protect our country.
