If you are an avid movie watcher, I am your worst nightmare. Seriously.
Yes, I am that person that asks too many questions. I also am that person that constantly wants to discuss the movie or throw out my theories about relationships between certain characters or what’s going to happen later on. “Is he a bad guy?” “Why is he a bad guy?” “Do those two have, like, a bad history or something?” “Did you get that joke?” “Why are we flashing back already?” “How long is this movie again?”
These qualities, which I prefer to see as curious and inquisitive, simply infuriate the people with whom I watch movies.
My rather “annoying” movie watching qualities also prevent me from liking certain types of movies. Action? Boring, the same thing happens EVERY single time. Horror? Absolutely not, I had to sleep with the lights on all night after watching “The Mummy.” Superheroes? Don’t even get me started. I still don’t understand the difference between “Spiderman” and “The Amazing Spiderman.”
Don’t get me wrong, I love movies, and I don’t mean to diss on certain genres that some people love. I totally admire your love of those movies! I also have so much respect for all the work and creativity that goes into the production of these movies.
I am simply stating that the movies I enjoy are ones that usually get me laughed at. I proudly own up to the fact that I love Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks productions. I also love cute comedies that leave me with a feel-good feeling.
For example, I watched “Hotel Transylvania 2” the other day and died laughing. I will also not confirm or deny whether or not I cried during “Dolphin Tale” and “The Intern.” (Okay, the answer is yes to both of those.)
Ultimately, I am an annoying movie watcher and proud to be one. I confess that I get way too emotionally invested and have no issue with watching “Anastasia” or “50 First Dates” over and over again. (I also love taking tons of snack breaks and can’t sit still for two hours straight.)
So, to those of you that have had the misfortune of watching a movie with me before, I apologize and I encourage you to movie on without me. I respect your determination to sit down and watch horror movies and not have any questions. For now, I am going to kick back with a little “Mulan” action. I hope that I one day can get rid of my irritating movie watching habits and maybe watch an action movie with you.
For now, I’ll just have to settle with finally figuring out the differences between all the superheroes. But hey, baby steps, right?
