Confessions Of A Makeupholic
Melissa Birnbaum

Hi, I'm Missy and I'm a makeupholic. Even though I'm just a child, my mommy gives me "play makeup" to decorate me and my sister's face with. I'm only allowed to use eyeshadow and lipgloss because mommy tells me that I'm not old enough for the rest.

Hi, I'm Missy and I'm a makeupholic. I keep all my makeup on the back of my bedroom door in a big organizer. When my friends come over, I roll it out on the floor so we can give each other makeovers. My favorite is when we make each other look funny and run downstairs to show my mom what we did.

Hi, I'm Missy and I'm a makeupholic. I'm in the sixth-grade and for my birthday my mom hired a real life makeup artist to come and teach me and my friends how to apply makeup. I'm beyond excited to show off my new skills at school, but an old teacher of mine passed me in the hallway and commented on how I was "too young" to wear makeup.

Hi, I'm Missy and I'm a makeupholic. I think I'm getting pretty good at doing my makeup. I watch a lot of videos and I even went to New York and bought my first ever MAC eyeshadow. Sometimes I think I'm the only girl who wears makeup at school, and it makes me feel weird, but I really like playing with it in the morning.

Hi, I'm Missy and I'm a makeupholic. I did my very own makeup for my bat mitzvah and everyone said it looked great for someone my age. They're surprised at my skill level because even though most of my friends just started playing with makeup, I've been practicing for years.

Hi, I'm Missy and I'm a makeupholic. I've started using my makeup to cover my freckles and the spots on my face. I won't be happy until my skin is one solid color and my eyes are rimmed in black. At least I'm not the only one covering my face. I notice that a lot of the girls in the hallways have their faces rimmed in orange, just a little darker than their neck, just thick enough to be a mask.

Hi, I'm Missy and I'm a makeupholic. I spend about a half-hour on my face when I go to hang out with my friends. I always want to be the prettiest one there and I figure makeup is the only way to do it. High School is hard. None of the other girls in my class seem to have pimples and I'm beginning to think it's just me.

Hi, I'm Missy and I'm a makeupholic. My favorite thing to do is sit around and experiment with colors. I don't wear makeup every day, but that's okay because I don't have to. It only took me 19 years, but I finally learned that all makeup is "play makeup." All makeup is a toy and fun. No one needs makeup, it's just a hobby. It's my hobby. Even though I spent a few years covering up with makeup, I've learned that it is so much more than that. Makeup is an art. It is a form of expression, and trust me it's a skill. I wouldn't say I'm "proud" of my history with makeup, but I'm definitely thankful because believe it or not, makeup helped me become who I am today, including the part of me who can walk around bare-faced and confident.

Hi, I'm Missy. I'm a makeupholic, and I'm NOT sorry.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
