I think we all have learned one thing this week: you do not mess with nurses.
This past weekend, Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, made quite the impression when she arrived to perform her talent in her nursing scrubs and proceeded to give a monologue all about her career.
Of course, people always have their opinions, including "The View" hosts Joy Behar and Michelle Collins. Behar and Collins both made mocking comments about the performance, including Behar questioning why Johnson was wearing a "doctor's stethoscope." Her scrubs were referred to as a "costume."
Obviously, a few nurses were offended by this. And by a few nurses, I mean thousands. The hashtag #NursesUnite immediately began trending, with thousands of tweets by nurses and those who support them speaking out about these comments.
All week, I have been seeing many articles shared on Facebook and other social media sites featuring nurses firing back at "The View." I agree with every single one. Not only is my older sister a nurse, I proudly attend a university with one of the greatest nursing programs in the country. I have many friends who spend many countless nights studying and many long days completing clinicals.
Nursing is not easy. Nurses spend their days changing and saving lives, and they deserve just as much respect as a doctor.
Two companies have already agreed with this sentiment and have decided to pull their ads from the show, despite the show's effort to honor nurses and make up for Behar and Collins' comments.
Johnson & Johnson and Eggland's Best have both made social media posts supporting nurses, along with dropping their ads from "The View."
It will be interesting to see this story play out, and see if any more companies drop their support for the show. As we have learned, nurses deserve respect and should not be mocked. Miss Colorado did a great thing by sharing her passion for her career, showing that nurses deserve much better than the treatment they received from Behar and Collins.
