Ah, the life of a college student who has to commute. Whether it's a 30-minute commute or a 2-hour commute, there is always something to hate about commuting. Shout out to the people who commute their lives away because let me tell you, it is not an easy feat.
1. The LIRR.
I'd like to say that the LIRR is worth the money you spend on it, but really, it's not. There's just something unappealing about spending 2 hours on a train that loses power in the cars (lights don't stay on) or blesses you with a cascade of water leaking out of the top as you enter and exit the train. I took a shower at home, but thanks LIRR for making sure I was a little soggy this morning.
2. Traffic.
If you live in any congested area (Long Island, NYC,etc.) you know that it will take you at least 45 minutes to get to your destination between the hours of 8 and 10am or 4 and 7pm, especially on a Friday. As if you needed to end your long (probably stressful) day at work or school, getting honked and shouted out as you try to safely make it home--while also hitting all the red lights because you're in a rush to get home.
3. The long days.
If you commute, you probably spend most of your days, well, commuting. As easy as it sounds to drive somewhere for a few hours or sit in a train, it's actually exhausting. Getting up 4 hours before your first class starts, only to get to school 10 minutes before your class starts is by far the most frustrating thing ever.
4. The people.
If you commute using public transportation (which most people do) you're subjected to mass amounts of people, in a small space, some of which still haven't discovered the wonderful invention of deodorant. And during cold and flu season, you can expect to hear coughing, wheezing, sneezing, and probably the depressing sound of your own immune system depleting as you try to fight off the mass germs.
5. Delays.
That will ruin your day. Just when you think you're finally on time for something, you come to realize that your form of transportation is delayed. And chances are it's on the day of a test or an important presentation. A delay of five minutes, really means half an hour and a reroute.
6. Waiting
If you're an impatient person like me, or a New Yorker in general, because that is totally a theme associated with us, waiting is the bane of our very existence. And when you commute, the waiting game is even worse. Waiting on line for a cup of coffee is an anxiety inducer when you may or may not miss your train. Waiting on a platform on a cold day for a train, is just obnoxious and if you forget anything at home, better not wait to go get it or you're not getting to where you need to be until hours after you needed to be there.
In short, commuting sucks. And if you don't agree then are you even commuting??
