Every communication science and disorder major goes through the same emotions. In order to be a speech pathologist, you need a passion for the job. The job opportunities for a speech pathologist are currently increasing which is really good for communication sciences and disorders majors. Not everyone can do what we hope to do one day. We all go through a daily struggle, but we all know one day this job will pay off.
1. "I can't get lower than a 'B.'"
In order to be a speech pathologist we need to attend graduate school which is very competitive so having a high GPA is needed.
2. "I shouldn't pick a different major."
There are times where we think about changing majors, but then we realized why we love this major so much. The classes can be challenging at times, but we all know it will pay off in the end.
3. "It's like learning a new language."
One perk of being a communication science and disorder major is the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA.) It's hard to explain to people, but we love showing off the words we can transcribe.
4. "Wow, that's a great job!"
Everyone keeps telling you that it's a great field to get into and you just start beaming with pride and are very proud.
5. "I major in communication sciences and disorders... speech pathology."
When people ask what you're majoring in and they look at you funny when you say "communication sciences and disorders" so you just say speech pathology.
6. "Who wants to form a study group?"
When it comes to studying, you need to find a group because no one knows what you're talking about half the time. You need people to help you because the classes are not always easy.
7. "Well, I'm not sleeping tonight again."
Being a speech pathologist means no sleep. You have many sleepless nights trying to cram chapters of information into one night.
8. "It's such a great career because you can work anywhere."
A speech pathologist can pretty much work anywhere. They can work in a school, hospital, nursing home, or a private practice.
9. "OMG! I know what they have!"
After taking like two classes, you think you know everything about speech and language. You act like a doctor and you think you can diagnose people, but in reality, you still have a lot of schooling ahead of you.
Every communication science and disorder majors know what you are talking about with these quotes. We all go through the same struggle for the same reason: to help people. We know, in the end, it will pay off and that's all that really counts. We love learning new things about speech and language. We are reminded every day why we love this career so much and I could not be happier with my decision.
