We've all considered ramen noodles "dinner" at one point...

Common Thoughts Of The Typical College Student

Sometimes I'll catch myself saying something or thinking something either very cliche or very strange, pertaining to college. And when that happens I'll laugh, because I know that thought never would have crossed my mind in high school.

It's funny how dramatically just a couple of years can change a mindset or an inclination for thought, but college has certainly changed mine.

I would say it's been for the better, though. I am a lot more optimistic, quick-witted, and relaxed than I was in high school, and even on my worst days I know that I am all-around happier. But I also recognize that I am certainly thinking some unique things that I would never have before, unless I actually attended college.

I like to think I'm not alone though.

In fact, I know I'm not, because throughout these past few semesters I've observed that we're really pretty much in the same boat. We all have random, funny, tell-tale thoughts and sentiments that really embody being a college student.

I've compiled together a little list of things you might think or say that you'd never have thought unless you were in college. Hopefully you relate, and can feel reassured that you are not alone in your struggles.

You know you're a college student when...

1.) ...your first question when you hear there will be an event on campus is "will there be food?"

2.) ...your second question is "could I win a free t-shirt?"

3.) ...you finish your homework before 11 pm and think "wow, it's so early."

4.) ...you swear that "tomorrow" you'll finally make time to get to the gym... every day...

5.) ...you tell yourself that you'll wake up early to study the following morning and when your alarm goes off you immediately set it for later and go back to sleep.

6.) ...you tell someone "I got so much sleep last night... like, 6 hours."

7.) ...you consider a packet of ramen noodles dinner.

8.) ...you spend more time organizing your books to procrastinate than you do opening and reading them.

9.) ...you wonder why your professors never pass back the exams at the beginning of class.

10.) ...and then wonder how that one test could possibly be worth 20% of your grade.

11.) ...you think, "it's due in a week? I have so much time, I can put that off."

12.) ...you think, "it's due in 5 days? I have so much time, I can put that off."

13.) ...you think, "it's due in 2 days? I still have time, I'll start it later."

14.) ...you think, "it's due in 12 hours. Why do I do this every time?"

No matter what your thoughts about college, you're not alone. Just embrace the community and shared experiences and try and get a laugh about it when you can!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
