If your last name is Smith, Johnson, Williams, Jones, Brown, Davis, Miller, Wilson, etc., you know exactly how life is with a common last name .

1. You’re impossible to find on Facebook.

Whenever someone says they’ll add you on Facebook, you always respond, “Yeah, it’ll just be easier for me to find you.”

2. All the good usernames on social media are taken.

You really have to get creative in order to make a unique username that actually is available. You either have to add a bunch of letters to your name or come up with a ton of letters to add to the end of your username.

3. If someone gives their username out wrong, you get added and followed by a lot of randoms.

A middle-schooler has a similar Snapchat name as me and I constantly have to tell little middle-schoolers that they have the wrong girl because they get upset when I don’t respond. Good thing Snap Codes were invented, because less kids are finding me.

4. You’re one of millions, not one in a million.

There are 2,000 Samantha Smiths in the United States. There are 2,871,269 Smiths in the United States alone.

5. Either you or your family members may be on the Federal Watch List for having a common last name.

This is an actual thing. My dad and brother both have “John Smith” in their name, so they were on the Federal No Fly List and had to fill out paperwork to prove that they were actual citizens and not terrorists just so we could get boarding passes to fly to Disney World. You can’t make this up.

6. You’re hard to look up in any database for anything.

You have to provide first name, last name, and phone number for any chance of finding you.

7. Your last name is used as examples for monogramming on pretty much everything for home décor.

This makes gift-giving pretty easy!

8. You’re surrounded by people with the same last name as you for graduations (or any other ceremony that requires you to sit alphabetically).

In a 1,200 person ring ceremony, there were over 20 Smiths and 10 Johnsons. You have to accept you’ll never be next to someone who doesn’t share your last name.

9. When you Google your name, you can never find anything about yourself unless you refine the results.

It makes it harder for jobs to find your social media and any potential negative things about you, so that’s probably a plus.

10. People always ask if you’re related to someone with your same last name.

Nope. Probably not. But if we were, I’m sure we wouldn’t even know it.

11. Classes get confusing when professors go by last names.

They always make a big deal out of having to say your first and last name, too.

12. People always stare at your ID a little bit longer than everyone else’s.

TSA always inspects my ID from top to bottom and back to front. And I always get stuck having to get my hands swabbed and patted down in security. Better safe than sorry.

13. You could try to go by your middle name, but that’s probably common, too.

You’ll never have a 100% unique name with a last name like yours. You just have to embrace it.

14. You try to avoid dating people with the same last name because you don’t want people to joke about incest.

Honestly, you try to avoid names that even remotely sound similar because it’s just not worth the hassle.

15. You never have to worry about your name being mispronounced.

Take that, people with difficult sounding last names.

16. No matter what, you still love your last name.

Because let’s face it, we run the world.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
