14 Things I Should Probably Commit To In 2018

Resolutions aren't my forte.

14 Things I Should Probably Commit To In 2018
Steven VanDesande Jr.

We are almost 4 months into the year of 2018 and I have not stuck with my New Years resolutions as well as I should have! I promised myself that I would get a new bangin' skincare routine, exercise 4 days a week, and make straight A's this semester. Even though I am having a rough time committing to those listed items, I want to commit to a few more things before this year goes by in a flash.

1. Study. Like ACTUALLY study.

I am so bad at cramming information in my head the night before a quiz or exam. I want to be able to commit to 15 mins of studying, days leading up to the night before.

2. Use my planner more.

I am really bad about writing EVERYTHING in my planner for maybe two weeks, and then I forget and just wing it, then the following week my whole routine is off kilter. I should really stop doing that.

3. Go to bed at a decent time. Regularly.

I know college kids are supposed to be exhausted all of the time (it's in the description, look if you don't believe me) but I think to go to bed at a decent time every night would be helpful. Now if I could only stop binge-watching Scandal.

4. Wash my face at night.

Something I'm even worse at. I am so good at washing my face in the morning but when it comes to laying in bed at midnight and realizing I didn't wash my makeup off, I just turn over and go to sleep.

5. Finish the Netflix shows I start watching.

If you were to look at my list on Netflix, you would be shocked at how many shows I started to binge and found another show in the middle of it. I am currently finishing Scandal and found it halfway through watching How to Get Away With Murder.

6. Become an awesome self-taught yogi.

If I did all of the yoga moves I pinned on Pinterest I would be teaching my own yoga classes.

7. Wake up before 10 in the morning.

This part goes hand in hand with #3.

8. Eat better.

I really wish I can crave vegetables the same way that I crave Chinese food and sushi.

9. Have better self-control when it comes to chips and queso.

This one speaks for itself. This is my meal when it comes to Mexican restaurants and I can never finish my cheese quesadillas.

10. Stretch every morning.

I used to be really flexible and I miss it. I think stretching before I start my day might improve my mood and allow me to meditate some.

11. Unplug sometimes.

I can be really bad about being on my phone, even during class. I want to be able to have a morning where I don't touch it or a night where I read a book before bed instead of Twitter.

12. Stop being my worst critic.

This is my worst quality I think. I don't take the time to be patient with myself when it comes to school or my life.

13. Putting my friends higher on my priority list.

This is my second worst quality. I know my life is busy but I should make more time for my friends. Everyone needs friends!

14. Loving myself more.

Here is the big one! I love to not love myself and it is a really bad habit I need to quit.

Whatever your resolutions are and your status is with sticking with them, keep going! If we have some resolutions in common, thank the Lord for I am not crazy! All in all, make 2018 your best year yet, whatever you decide to accomplish.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
