Time at home, on break, is time to relax from all of the schoolwork that seems to devour us, and while it fills us with knowledge, we’re typically starving for quality food. It’s November and campus salads, Jimmy John’s delivery and microwaveable pizzas are old news.
The happiest time of year is upon us. Not only are we preparing our hearts for togetherness with friends and family, but also preparing our bellies for an abundant amount of homemade food. With Thanksgiving only a few days away I can’t help but recall last year’s feast of turkey, lasagna, pineapple casserole and ginger brandy sangria. I also can’t help but recall the first trimester of my food baby.
The holidays are a time to break out your nicest sweaters and cutest pair of booties. We’re all preparing to catch up with family we haven’t seen in months and we want to look our best. My best doesn’t include a food baby, but with the lack in quality meals I have back at school, I can’t help but see a little one showing after I indulge during the holidays. While I could just make a few sarcastic, self-loathing jokes about my little muffin or cupcake (literally) inside, I would rather just hide it.
Here are the best, most trendy ways to cover up your holiday food baby!
1. Black
Let’s start simple and go with the most obvious version of visually thin that there is. Black is a great way to cover up that little bump. A lot of colors leave a small shadow right underneath the bottom of Thanksgiving dinner number one. Not only does black not leave a shadow but it’s elegant and perfect for this time of year.
Personally, as an Italian girl, I am always completing my outfits with black but adding a pop of fall colors in a scarf or necklace like maroon, orange or green would make the ensemble more casual for this particular holiday.
2. T-shirt Dresses
I am always one to keep up with the trends and one of the cutest, most casual looks right now is the T-shirt dress. Being tighter in the chest and arms makes for a girly look and the flow toward the mid-section is perfect for an all-out brawl with that plate of dinner rolls.
The typically plain design makes for a great bulletin board to dress up with jewelry, vests or scarves. The above knee length is perfect to add a pair of knee-high boots or booties if you haven’t participated in no shave November and are looking to show off a little more leg. It’s not snowing yet, so you might as well let those Carrie Underwood’s breathe before it’s all leggings and sweatpants.
3. High-waisted pants
In the 16th century, women struggled for air wearing corsets to suck in their midsections. But it’s the 20th century and I like to breathe in what’s cooking in the kitchen. Instead of wearing an irritating pair of granny panties or Spanx to keep it all together, high-waisted jeans can get the job done in a cuter and more comfortable way.
You could even go a step further and size larger to add some wiggle room. *Insert food baby name* may get a little feisty and growl at you throughout your first, second or third meal but don’t let him/her control you. You deserve that extra slice of pie. School kicked your butt this semester — maybe not into shape, but it kicked your butt!
4. Accessories
Think of your favorite uncle at every holiday. He is pulling out another deck of cards having you pick one while he simultaneously pulls a quarter from your ear. He is distracting you from the real elephant in the room: his hair plugs.
Accessories are a great way to distract from your elephant in the room. With a big, chunky necklace or some dangling earrings, you’re a shoe-in for looks at your statement pieces and away from your belly.
Happy Thanksgiving, foodies!
