A Coming Out Letter: Election Year
Hillary

Dear people who may know and love me as the person who tries to be unbiased,

I'm biased. As a 20-year-old, this year was finally my first year to vote for president. And I was excited. But, because of social media, and petty comments, I've tried not to blatantly say who I voted for. Now that everything is over and done with, I can come out of my political closet as something I didn't think I'd originally be: a democrat.

I voted for Hilary.

And I'm writing this letter right now, on election day, knowing that you'll see it after you know who our next president will be, and I really pray it is not Trump.

I voted for Hilary for many reasons, and although you may look at her husband or other "scandals" that Trump has tried to make popular, I look at her and see a woman who I can admire. She has been working for the government for over 30 years in various ways, and that to start with is quite a feat. To have a woman working hard for other women in the government when I'm sure she's faced more persecution than we've seen... that's strong.

I supported Hilary because she makes sense. But I also supported her because she's a woman. It has been less than 100 years since women got the right to vote, and a little more than 50 since African Americans have been able to vote. In less than 50 years we elected a black man for president, and I think it is finally time for a woman to be in the oval office. The fact that there hasn't been one is appalling and the fact that only person really against her in this race is not even near her caliber AND is still considered... I just don't understand. Women can and should be president, especially a woman so experienced, so composed, so ready for president as she is.

I find it ridiculous that everyone can't see that. I find it crazy that people are asking her questions about ridiculous things like... her shoes? We would never do that to a man. We would never scrutinize a man so much over a supposed illness, or appearance, or what their spouse does, but we have done that to Hilary. Do you not see the issue in that?

I voted for Hilary, because despite the emails, she has been vetted by so many. I think what we need to realize is that every politician messes up, and granted this is on a bigger scale, if the FBI didn't convict her, we're safe. Do you not trust the Federal Bureau of Investigation? Do you not trust 30 years of experience? If I can't trust that, then I don't know what I can trust. I am going to put my trust in our system, with all of its checks and balances to make sure that our country is safe like I have been for the last 20 years.

I voted for Hilary because I believe she can do it. I believe that she can make history. I believe she can make change.

I'm sorry if that disappoints you but #imwithher.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
