Snotgirl is published by Image Comics. It is written by Bryan Lee O'Malley with art by Leslie Hung.
Ok, readers. Quick recap of the basic plot: Snotgirl is the story of Lottie Person. A famous fashion blogger, who to the outside world, is utterly flawless. She knows all the right people, she goes to all the right parties, she has clothes, she has money, her life is perfect. Except for one thing. Lottie has severe allergies. Allergies so bad that her nose runs uncontrollably (hence the name, Snotgirl). It may seem like such a small dilemma to many of us, but to Lottie, it's huge. It's reputation shattering. It's the thing that no one can ever know about her. No matter the cost.
*WARNING: FROM HERE ON, THIS WILL CONTAINING SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT READ ISSUES 1 – 3*
So, we pick up issue 4 exactly where we left off in issue 1, while the narrative follows where we left off in issue 3. I'm sure I made that sound more confusing than it actually is. At the end of issue 1, we were left to think Caroline was dead. At the end of issue 2, we discovered that not to be the case. Finally, in the end of issue 3, we see Lottie run in to Caroline, yet again, at a party. During the first scene of issue 4, we see a portion of what happened to Caroline the night Lottie thought she killed her, while the dialogue is of Lottie talking with Caroline at the party, asking her what happened that night. Which Caroline is SUPER chill about, considering she woke up on a bathroom floor, covered in her own blood.
Of course, Lottie is rather quickly right back to being her self-absorbed...well...self. Angrily looking over social media at the mean things people are saying about her. Mean things about how she totally lost it and shoved Charlene into a pool. Now she is too embarassed to attend Meg's latest party. Because of the pool shoving thing. Not because of Meg's fiancee inappropriately coming on to her...while he was naked, which personally, I think the latter was much more embarassing and cause for not attending a party. A lot happens in this issue. An interesting email to Esther (Lottie's intern), a weird run in with Sunny (Lottie's ex), and a curious not-so-random meeting with Detective John Cho (who seems to be a bit obsessed with Lottie).
Pros: We get a bit of an idea about what happened to Caroline. Which if you've been reading, I'm sure you have been just as curious as me. I was honestly starting to get a bit annoyed with not knowing what happened to her and how she just popped back up out of \the blue. It may not be an action-y comic, so it mat not always seem like it, but a lot happens in each issue and this one is no exception. Every issue, Lottie just frustrates me with her selfish, egotistical behavior, but at the same time it's so perfect and I absolutely love/hate her. We have also been seeing different sides to Lottie, deep down below that shallow exterior beats a heart with real feelings. Honestly, Lottie isn't what I would call a “bad” person. What I really want to know is how she became the way she is? Why is outer beauty SO important to her? And what the hell is up with Caroline?!
Cons: Lottie's doctor is a little...much. I mean. She tells him she pushed a girl in a pool and screamed at her and he gets all... “I think that's hot”. Who would think that was hot? Why? I understand that O'Malley and Hung are trying to express the creepy doctor thing, but I found myself thinking, “Really? That's his response? That's what he thinks is hot?” It kind of gave him more of a murderer vibe than a pervert vibe. And maybe it was supposed to. But the fact that I'm not sure says something as well. I guess I just feel the dialogue could have been executed a little differently.
Overall Score: 9/10
We had some important blanks filled in with this issue, but still even more popped up in their place! Needless to say, I'm back to impatiently waiting for issue 5 to come out.
Happy reading!
