Another year of San Diego Comic Con has gone by and, sadly, I was not there to enjoy it. For those of you that might not know...
Not only does Comic Con “create awareness of, and appreciation for, comics,” it also is the event that many movie and television show trailers are released (such as the 25 in this list), which is pretty much the only reason I have for wanting to go to Comic Con. (If you hadn’t figured out from some of my previous articles, I’m a bit obsessed with TV).
Getting back on track, though, I decided it would be fun to rank my top ten favorite trailers from this year’s convention. So without further ado, here is my first top ten list!
10. “Legends of The Hidden Temple”
It wasn’t so much the trailer that got me excited because let’s be real, it looks like any old cheesy Nickelodeon movie. But the nostalgia factor is definitely there. This movie is based on a game show from the nineties where teams of kids would have to compete in challenges to reach an “artifact” in the temple. It appears the this adaptation is taking a similar approach, but it will be an action film rather than a game show.
9. “The LEGO Batman Movie”
I really don’t know why I’m excited for this movie, but I am. Maybe it’s because I think this version of Batman is so ridiculous that it’s enjoyable. Maybe I just really like LEGO. Or it could just be that I’m tired and when I rewatch the trailer after a good night of sleep, I’ll actually hate it. Regardless, I think this will be an interesting take on the story of Batman and Robin (and Alfred) and will hopefully be just as good as “The LEGO Movie.”
8. “Legion”
This was actually the last of the trailers that I watched from the convention and that’s only because I didn’t realize it was a Marvel television show (and I watch everything Marvel). Although this time, it seems to be set in the “X-Men” universe. The preview was kind of confusing, but then again, I don’t know much about the “X-Men” outside of what I’ve seen in the movies. I am excited that Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation”) is going to be in it, so that’s another factor in why I can’t wait to watch it!
7. “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League”
It might be kind of cheating to include multiple films in one spot (and I’m going to do it again later on), but since they’re in the same DC Extended Universe that I touched on last week with the “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” film, I figured it would be okay. I am equally excited for both of these movies. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was one of my favorite parts of “Batman v Superman,” so the fact that she’s already got her own solo film on the way is fantastic! And although the series has so far been confusing, it will definitely be interesting to see the heroes come together with The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg to take down evil. Or whatever they’re doing. I don’t know. The trailer confused me as much as “Dawn of Justice” did.
6. Marvel’s Netflix Series
See? I told you I’d combine more favorites into one spot. Out of the three trailers/teasers that were released for the Marvel/Netflix shows, I’m probably the least excited for “Iron Fist” just because I don’t know anything about the character, but the preview looks pretty cool and like I said, I watch everything Marvel. Then would be “Luke Cage” for similar reasons. All I know is from what we saw in “Jessica Jones.” I don’t read the comics much, but I want to eventually. And I’m most excited for “The Defenders” which is the team up of the three aforementioned heroes as well as Daredevil (and possibly The Punisher).
5. “Doctor Strange”
Marvel + Benedict Cumberbatch = Greatness? I sure hope so. I’ve been excited for this movie for a while, even before the first teaser was released, and now even more so. Not only does it look super trippy (almost enough to make me dizzy), it opens up many more doors for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Multiverse. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but I think this is going to be a great installment to the franchise.
4. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
This trailer probably would have ranked lower on my list had it been based on the previous teasers and might not have even made the cut at all except that it’s basically a Harry Potter prequel. Well, sort of. Based on the wizard Newt Scamander who wrote the textbook with the name of the movie, we nomajs nomaji muggles finally get a glimpse into the wizarding world of the United States of America. It’s gonna be interesting to see how this first step away from the famous Potter is received.
3. “Suicide Squad”
Alright. If you know me well, you’ve probably heard me talk about this movie. Because I am SO EXCITED for it. Sure, “Batman v Superman” didn’t win me over, but I am confident after seeing teasers, trailers and TV spots for this film that I will soon love the DC Extended Universe. What I’ve really liked from what I’ve seen is that “Suicide Squad” is more… lighthearted? Well, at least it has more comedy, but I don’t know if it will be any less dark than “Dawn of Justice.”
2. “Sherlock”
BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH MADE THIS LIST TWICE?!?! Yes indeed he did. Though I have yet to see the 2015 Christmas special, the fans have been waiting for the fourth set of episodes to be released for what seems like (and actually is) years. The trailer gives us a glimpse into Sherlock’s return after a presumed-dead villain made a quick appearance at the end of series three. Again, I was confused, but that just seems to be the norm for this sort of thing. These episodes cannot come soon enough!
1. Look At All Them Zombies
I tried to be clever with this number one spot, rather than just saying which trailer makes me the most excited. Can you guess which one it is? Well actually it’s two. The “Fear the Walking Dead” and “The Walking Dead” promos have given me a reason to hope for the end of August (because college definitely isn’t doing that for me). I am equally excited for the original and the spin-off because I feel so invested in the characters lives and just knowing that they’re all about to face potential death… I just need these shows to come back right now, okay??
Well, I hope you liked my first top ten list on the Odyssey. It was a lot of fun to work on and I’ll probably do some more “top favorites” in the future, although I’ll try not to make them as long as this one. As always, feel free to leave a comment on this article or on the social media that you found it on to let me know what you think of the article and which movies or shows the trailers got you most excited for.
