The recent release of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" means one thing –– an influx of brand new comic book movies are going to be released in the very near future. Many find this aspect to be very exciting, however many others find this to be very annoying, tiresome and boring. In fact, many believe that the reason as to why the reviews for the recent Batman and Superman flick have been so poor is because of the fact that these reviewers are getting so tired of all of these comic book movies. I can't say I blame them either.
Don't get me wrong, I love myself a good superhero movie. In fact, the upcoming "Suicide Squad" is a movie I have looked forward to since they first announced it. I can't wait to see these super villains turn into heroes for a bit to try and save the day while keeping their bad guy tendencies. That's where my excitement starts to fade though.
In the next five years, both Marvel and DC plan on releasing over thirty different movies based on their comics. That means every other month, we are going to have a new comic book movie.
The film industry is known to do this. Once one type of movie does extremely well at the box office, other studios begin to make the same type of films and begin to over-saturate the market. For example, "Twilight" did amazingly well so that meant every Young Adult novel became a movie. The market became over saturated, people stopped watching the movies, now these movies are going away.
There used to be one or two comic book movies released a year, usually in the summer or holiday season. Now, it is rare to go to a movie theater without seeing a single comic book movie on the marquee. I often found myself being extremely excited for the next new super hero movie, but now I just think to myself "oh cool" then move on with my life.
Don't get me wrong, I do expect to see many of these upcoming films including the two "Justice League" movies and "Wonder Woman" movie. Those are classic super hero stories that I just have to see up on the big screen. However, many of the other movies will have to take a back seat for me while I check out the other movies that will be released in the mean time.
I believe that the best things really do come in small doses. I loved when a new comic book film was released here and there, but now I'm getting tired of seeing it everywhere and I know I am not alone on this. It's a minority group, but pretty soon it will become a majority if the studios don't take it down a few notches. I'd rather have a few amazing movies every few years than a bunch of mediocre ones.
