If you took part in an a cappella group at some point in your life, you will definitely relate to these facts that hit a little too close to home.
1. Getting sick is not allowed.
Your body is your instrument, so it has to be healthy at all times.
2. You no longer sing the melody to a song.
Bass lines and funky rhythms take precedence now.
3. Two painful words to hear: Vocal. Rest.
4. All of the groups at your school are a big family, one that may be a little too close to each other.
5. You find yourself referencing Pitch Perfect more times than you'll ever admit.
6. No one likes being placed next to the beatboxer on stage in fear of being showered with spit.
It could be worse, though, you could have to use the microphone after them.
7. Audition season takes a toll on you.
It's 47 versions of the newest radio single, a previously done a cappella song, or a rendition of Adele that didn't come close to the original. Pray for at least 10 solid candidates to call back.
8. The entire world thinks that your life mimics Pitch Perfect.
Yes, there are striking parallels, but this isn't a Hollywood production, it's the real world. We do, however, have just as much fun as the movie depicts.
9. But as much as we hate to admit it, the movie made the aca-sphere way cooler.
An article shows the drastic spike in collegiate a cappella participants, as well as audience attendance at competitions and events. People are excited about a cappella!
10. There's always one group member that can't find the right note.
We've all been guilty; sometimes you get stuck with the impossible money note.
11. Humans outside of the a cappella realm seem to believe that we just open our mouths and arrangements come out.
Arrangements alone take hours to complete by one or two individuals. Then the entire group needs to learn all of the parts in order to make the full sound happen. You could say it's like a sport because we practice just as many hours as the athletes do.
12. The Pentatonix have made an impact on your musical career.
The season three winners of NBC's The Sing-Off have shed a new light on innovation in a cappella while entertaining listeners across the globe.
13. There's no rush quite like going to competitions and conferences.
14. At some point, you have to sing a song that you hate because you got out-voted during the selection.
15. At the end of the day, your group is your family.
You're with them more hours of the week than not, and you're freakishly defensive about them. They're the siblings you never got in life. All of the stress and hard work pays off when you take the stage with them and showcase your talent.
