A Letter To My College Best Friend

Thank you for showing me that friendship has no distance, and that distance has only made our bond stronger

A Letter To My College Best Friend
Nikki Naccarato

The years we spend in college are some of the most pivotal years of our lives. We enter as a teenager and leave as an adult, and the friends we make during that time get to witness our transformation. It is the first time we are on our own, away from the rules of our parents, and are responsible for making our own decisions. We are forced to make mistakes and learn from them. Because of that, the bonds we create with our friends from college are completely different than the one we have with our friends from high school. We rely on each other and become each others family. But not often enough, do we get to tell them how valuable that relationship actually is to us.

Dear College Best Friend,

When I think back to my college years, you are what I think of. My memories with you are what flashes in my mind first and they define my views of our school and the time we spent there. You were by my side through all the tears, the laughter, the heartbreak, and the embarrassing moments. We laughed harder than anyone and we made everything at that school ours. I want to take this time to thank you for being one of the most important people in my life. You are my ride or die, my other half, and my sister. You are the first person I call or text when something goes wrong or when something exciting happens. We laugh, we cry, and sometimes you piss me off. But at the end of the day, you are always there.

As we enter adulthood, we no longer have the privilege of living right next to each other and being able to run to each others room whenever something big happens. When I’m bored or hungry I can’t text you to go to get food or go to the mall. Hanging out now means advanced notice, planning, and taking off of work. Our lives require us to be apart as we start making our way into this world and start becoming the strong, independent, and successful women we are meant to be. But you make me stronger. You are my biggest fan. Whenever I doubt myself, you remind me of all the traits that make me great and have gotten me as far as I have gotten. You know me better than anyone- my personality, my habits, my favorite food, and all the things that I do that are really annoying. You let me tell you the same story five times and each time you act like it's the first. You let me be me and you love me despite my flaws. Thank you.

We are only just beginning our lives and the challenges we faced in college are going to seem minuscule compared to what we have ahead of us. We have to begin finding our place in this world, start figuring out what we want to do with our lives, and how we are going to get there. But as we enter this new chapter, I know that you will be my support system from wherever you are, encouraging me, allowing me to vent through long text stories, and reminding me of all the great memories we had in our prime time of life - college. Thank you for showing me that friendship has no distance, and that distance has only made our bond stronger.

When you begin college, you anticipate the parties, the all-nighters, and the freedom you finally have. But you never think about the people that become your family for the rest of your life. So thank you, for helping me get through those four years, and being there for me for those to come. Your friendship means more to me than you will ever know.

With love,

Your College Best Friend

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
