8 Reasons Why Going To College With Your Friend From Home Is The Best

When my best friend and I decided to attend the same college, I knew we had a great four years ahead of us. I didn't realize, however, just how much I would value her presence on campus when our first semester started.

Here are just 8 of the reasons why going to college with a friend from home makes the experience so much better.

1. Goodbyes aren’t as hard.

Bianca VanCleef

Leaving all your friends and family is difficult enough as it is, so it’s a relief to have one less tearful hug and one less person to miss.

2. The transition is easier.

Bianca VanCleef

The first few weeks of college are a swarm of new people, places, and experiences. Seeing a familiar face around campus will help to keep you from getting overwhelmed.

3. You have someone to reminisce with.

Bianca VanCleef

Your most common phrase to each other will be “remember when...”

4. You always have someone to grab dinner with.

And to complain with about the dining hall options.

5. You have someone you trust.

Bianca VanCleef

You may feel like the people you met last week are your best friends, but the truth is that you don't really know them yet. Your home friend will be there to check up on you, look out for you, and support you when things get hard.

6. They understand everything.

Bianca VanCleef

You have to explain home to your school friends, and school to your home friends. This friend needs no explanation.

7. You can carpool.

Those long car rides back to campus after breaks feel significantly shorter, and your parents will appreciate the saved gas money.

8. You have a reminder of where you came from.

In the face of all these changes, your friend will keep you grounded.

Often times home life and school life feel so separate, and having someone to unite them makes everything feel a little smoother.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
