Before I begin, I want to make sure that everyone knows I am in no way trying to shame those who absolutely love the "college kid" lifestyle. College is your own experience, and everyone should live it out the way that makes them happiest.
However, I am not one of those college students. I don't like parties, I stay away from Greek events, I'm not in any clubs, I don't go to sports games, and overall, I'm really only on campus when I need to be; for class. More than often, I hear people talk about college like it is the greatest experience you will ever have, and being young and at a university should be some of the most carefree times of your life. I've seen, heard, and read posts from a lot people say that they aren't ready to leave college, that they want four more years, or they wish it would never end.
I would be lying if I said that I'm happy that I never have this mindset. But, I really never do. For me, college is not for parties, clubbing, or living out my social prime.
For me, college is a very, very small part of my life, and one that I am not planning on having my best memories from. In fact, most of my college years thus far have been spent working, doing class work, studying, sleeping, paying bills and keeping my eye on my graduation date. That's my goal, my purpose of being a student, and the only reason I am enrolled in college.
My "exciting" days consist of relaxing at home with my fiance, going to the mall or having an occasional, and I mean occasional weekend out with my friends. While I know that being 21 is an exciting age, it by no means will be my best age. Plus, 50 years from now, I don't want to look back and remember my fondest memories of going to college parties or campus events.
So, what will be the best years of my life? That's the best part, I don't know yet. What I do know however, is that college is giving me the opportunity to create the best years of my life in the future.
Traveling the world, educating students, being a kick-ass teacher, trying new and heart-stopping things, and giving back to my community; these are the things I want to remember. My motivation in school has been graduation, because I am so ready to start my career. These endless hours of studying, sleepless nights of reading, and long hours of work are going to be worth it. So if you find yourself wondering if you are missing out if you are ever committing yourself to your studies; don't feel guilty. Keep going, you've got this.
Remember, this is just the beginning. I can't wait to make the best of my college education, and make the greatest of memories. Like I said, if you are someone who loves your life in college to the core, then I am so very happy for you. Everyone should enjoy their experiences in life, whatever their priorities may be. But please do remember why you are in college to begin with, and what your end goals and dreams really are. Keep touch with who you are, and don't lose sight of your destination.
College is not and will not be the best years of my life. What will? Only time will tell.
