College is a time for new opportunities, and as we embark on this journey we look to what the future can hold. For some it’s the path to the job they’ve always aspired to have, or the path to finding the career they never thought of pursuing. College can also be an escape from a small town, where a person never felt like they belonged, or even all the social anxieties created by the small minded people of their community. The time spent at college is said to be a difficult mountain, but can be the best time of our lives.
We are entering into a new chapter of our lives and possibilities are endless. We can become doctors, nurses, teachers, scientists; you name it and it’s a possibility. We can meet new people that could be a best friend for life or a person who impacts our life forever. You never know what can be accomplished unless you start on your way.
Dorothy knew she would make it to the Emerald City, but she didn't imagine the friendships and interruptions that would develop. Just like Dorothy we are on our own yellow brick road the only thing left up to us is if we stop to smell the poppies or help the tin man with his oil can. Even with all the good that is a possibility, there are still the bad that few care to realize.
There will be late night studying, figuring out how to do many things on your own, and, for some, growing accustomed to living with a roommate. Not every change from high school to college is going to be a difficult one, but leaving your family, for what may be the longest period of time ever, and friends, you are accustomed to seeing on a daily basis, obviously will be. Likewise, being familiar with the teachers/professors you will have isn't as common as in high school. The main changes we face are due to college being much larger than high schools and due to the fact college is a preparation for a career. Whether it is a two year or four year college, we face the change from basic core classes to mostly career based courses. College isn't just the good and bad that can be seen through another person's experiences, it is what we as the students make of the experience.
Like with all life, college is what the person makes of it. What one person calls the worst years of their life can be the best for another. It all depends on what you do with the time you have, make yourself miserable and its terrible or have fun while you work and it will forever be a happy memory. No matter what your expectations of college are, use your time to make memories, because memories will show you how far you have come.
