College can be fun and it can be miserable. I've had both ends of the spectrum and everything in between so I figured I would share some tips that I wish I would have known when I was first starting.
1. Don't arrive 30 minutes early for class. Odds are the professor won't be there and you'll just be there sitting...waiting...
2. Just get the book! Your professor may tell you that you don't need it, but you actually might. Trust me I know this from personal experience.
3. Pay attention to your surroundings. People who ride bikes don't care if they hit you by the way... also know this from personal experience.
4. Syllabus week actually does not mean chill week. This isn't high school – you don't just play 'the name game' on the first day.
5. If you feel like you won't do well in a class, drop it. Guess what.. I know this from personal experience. #stuckinspanish
6. Don't be dumb. Yeah, in high school acting dumb was super cute (not really) but you need to know that college is not the time nor the place to act like a complete idiot. Be smart in you choices and actions.
7. Go through recruitment. Not your thing? Cool, do it anyway. It is a great way to meet people and even if you don't join you still meet new people. Maybe your attitude towards Greek life will change, too.
8. Nap. It's actually really good for you to nap everyday, so I'm just letting you know to take advantage of any extra time you have by napping.
9. A college 8 a.m. is not equivalent to a high school 8 a.m. They aren't the same, they just aren't. You won't understand until you experience going to bed at the same exact time you did in high school then having to run to your 8 a.m and maybe...possibly make it on time.
10. GO TO CLASS! There are students in some of my classes who are already skipping and I honestly don't know how they do it. You cover a lot of material during class time so don't skip.. just go. You can do it.
11. Talk to people. I'm not what you would call a "people person," so trust me when I say be friends with students in your class, on your hall, in your fraternity/sorority. Talk to people and be their friend. Help them and let them help you.
12. Be prepared to not understand everything. The chemistry class you took in high school is not equal to the chemistry class you will take in college. Also, you'll probably have a professor from another country...good luck.
13. Don't even stress about making your bed. When you get done with classes or during your break you're just going to go right back to sleep so don't waste your time in the mornings.
14. Don't pay to do laundry. I bet someone you know has a house or lives somewhere close to where you go to school and they'll let you borrow their washer and dryer so don't pay for it.
15. Memory foam. Trust me, your body will thank you.
16. Enjoy every moment. Have fun, live your life, and cherish it.
